Location: University of Oklahoma Medical Center

Shift, Full-Time, Days 9a-9p

OU Health's PACU unit has recently expanded to 2 floors with 58 bays in our new adult patient tower. Our PACU is a fast-paced environment that includes high acuity and wide variety of patients. The unit has a 2:1 patient ratio with the support of supervisor. We use self scheduling and require 2-3 call shifts per 30 day schedule and one Summer and Winter Holiday. We also have dedicated Night PACU RNs and staff 24/7.

The OU Health Nurse Residency Program provides the graduate nurse with resources and rich experiences that will serve as a strong foundation for a successful nursing career. OU Health nurse residents receive guidance and support from a primary preceptor and clinical education specialist to successfully bridge the transition from student to professional practice. The program features ongoing structured learning opportunities for residents, a strong social support network, mentoring and preparation to obtain national certification in their chosen specialty area. General Description:

Under general supervision, provides nursing care in a hospital to a variety of patients with health problems ranging from simple to complex.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients.
  • Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician order on assigned patients. 
  • Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment. 
  • Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients, observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary. 
  • Administers medication as prescribed. Initiates, regulates and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
  • Delivers patient care competently. 
  • Interacts with family and patient in sharing care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge.
  • Informs patient and family of hospital procedures. 
  • Makes referral regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. 
  • Delegates tasks to support staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.  Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.

Experience: N/A

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. ACLS (American Heart Association) required within 6 months of hire.  PALS (American Heart Association) required within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures. 
  • Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
  • Some computer skills.
