About The Role:
The Assistant Director of Custodial Operations is responsible for ensuring the safe, secure, and clean operation of campus facilities. This role focuses on managing the custodial team, as well as overseeing contracted custodial services. The position reports to the Director of Maintenance & Custodial Operations and is accountable for maintaining housekeeping operations and implementing quality control standards across both internal and contracted teams. This position requires strong leadership skills, customer service expertise, and a proactive approach to solving problems while fostering an inclusive environment.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Facility Management: Maintain the physical condition of buildings, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and security.
- Supervision & Leadership: Directly supervise the custodial team, and manage performance through the work order system. Oversee the external contracted custodial provider.
- Quality Control: Ensure consistent cleaning standards by performing audits and managing the quality of service provided by both internal and contracted staff.
- Customer Service & Advocacy: Provide exceptional service to faculty, staff, and students, demonstrating approachability, problem-solving, and support for student success.
- Adaptability & Problem-Solving: Analyze and resolve issues at the root level, ensuring the problem is addressed swiftly and professionally.
- Team Collaboration & Inclusion: Foster an inclusive work environment, collaborating effectively with all team members and leadership, promoting values of diversity, and ensuring all employees feel supported.
Key Responsibilities:

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
- Team Supervision: Oversee Custodial staff, ensuring all areas are well-maintained, including effective management of the work order system.
- Backup Leadership: Serve as a backup to the Director of Maintenance & Custodial Operations, ensuring continuity of operations.
- Work Order System Oversight: Train teams in the proper use of the work order system and ensure timely completion of tasks within set time limits.
- Vendor Relations: Research, evaluate, and provide recommendations for outside vendors related to Building Operations purchases, services, and supplies.
- Pest Control & Maintenance: Manage all pest control programs and assess the need for repairs or improvements to campus facilities.
- Uniform & Equipment Management: Oversee the purchasing and maintenance of uniforms and tools for all Facilities Team members.
- Program Development: Develop and manage key operational programs, including recycling & trash disposal.
- Performance Audits: Regularly audit cleanliness, performance, and compliance across all workforces to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Recycling & Waste Management: Design and implement an effective recycling program, including monitoring waste streams and collaborating with users to improve systems.
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree in a related field or 5+ years of relevant experience in facility management or similar environment.
- Supervisory Experience: Previous experience in supervising teams, with the ability to delegate tasks and manage performance effectively.
- Attention to Detail & Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, ensuring clear communication and precision in execution.
- Decision-Making Ability: Strong decision-making skills, able to act quickly and effectively under pressure.
- Teamwork & Independence: Thrive in a collaborative team environment while also being able to work independently when necessary.
