Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Programs, this position supports the safe and accessible delivery of recreation programs within the Children, Youth, Inclusion, and Sports & Skating portfolios for the Town of Milton. The role ensures compliance with relevant policies, procedures, and legislation, and assists with program administration, and employee supervision and leadership. This position also provides regular evening and weekend on-the-job training and mentorship to part-time employees, with responsibilities spread across multiple Town facilities.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Actively support direct program delivery

    • Work scheduled in-program shifts (e.g. registered and drop-in programs, special events, etc.) based on the seasonal needs of the team to ensure high quality and consistent program delivery

    • Assist with emergency shift coverage as required, based on incumbent qualifications

    • Respond to and mediate in-person customer questions, comments, and concerns, escalating to Coordinator, Recreation when necessary

    • May be required to obtain additional certifications to effectively provide direct program delivery, based on program needs

  • Support, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate part-time program employees

    • Conduct program visits, primarily during instructional program delivery, and assist with employee evaluations as required

    • Provide coaching and feedback to part-time program employees and volunteers during their shifts, including in-program coaching and mentorship, empowering part-time employees to deliver quality programs and excellent customer service

    • Assist with the design, implementation, and delivery of employee training sessions to ensure policies and procedures are communicated, quality standards are maintained and improved, and employees are prepared for emergency response

  • Provide administrative support for the program team

    • Under the guidance of the Supervisor, Recreation Programs, input and maintain recreation programs, including registered and drop-in programs, using recreation software (Xplor Recreation),

    • Support the onboarding of part-time program employees and volunteers, including assistance with screening, interviews, and completion of onboarding processes (e.g. references check, certification verification, etc.)

    • Support the payroll process for part-time employees by reviewing scheduled and submitted hours, verifying shift changes, and ensuring timely and accurate submission of hours worked.

    •  Assist with creating, updating, and distributing schedules, program plans, and supply inventories.

    • Assists with analyzing statistical information and preparation of reports to summarize findings related to program delivery results

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary diploma in Recreation & Leisure, or a related field

  • Minimum two (2) years working in a municipal recreation environment directly in the specified program areas

  • Minimum one (1) year experience overseeing employees and volunteers, and working with the general public

  • Minimum two (2) years progressive supervisory experience in a municipal or recreation setting is preferred

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification

  • High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification

  • HIGH FIVE Quest 2 certification

  • Behaviour Management Systems certification (preferred)

  • Safe Food Handling Certification (preferred)

  • Sport for Life Physical Literacy certification or equivalent recognized organization(preferred)

  • National Coaching Certificate Program- NCCP (preferred)

  • Proficiency in registration software (Xplor Recreation preferred)

  • Strong program planning skills

  • The successful candidate is required to travel between sites. Access to transportation to travel between work locations in a timely manner is required.
