About you and this role

The primary responsibility of this position is to support our Polyurethanes R&D organization in the preparation of samples for R&D product development, customer sampling and preparation for new product trials.  Specifically, the person in this role will make chemical blends up to 275 gallons, conduct quality control testing and record and report results.  The preparation of these samples includes dispensing chemicals from bulk tanks, totes, drums and pails and then mixing these chemicals by various methods.  The person in this role will work closely with our Pilot Plant Coordinator, other R&D technicians and our shipping/receiving department to ensure the safe and efficient fulfillment of orders.  Additionally, this role supports TS&D scientists and the TS&D Testing Lab in preparation of internal samples for application and performance testing and the documentation of results as well as the protection of Dow’s intellectual property. 

General expectations for this role are having a positive attitude and strong work ethic in following safety protocols, maintaining neat and organized workspace, and the accurate and timely documentation of results in batching and quality testing. 

Responsibilities

• Work as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in developing, screening and commercializing new products and processes.
• Manage and then safely execute laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data.
• Prepare for and independently perform standard and some non-routine procedures using relevant equipment and instruments, for which activities may include sample or materials preparations, equipment setup and/or configurations, and proper handling and disposal of waste materials that may be generated from experimental activities.
• Accurately and reliably record readings and observations using relevant equipment and instruments.
• Act responsible for calibration, safe operation, and routine maintenance of simple and moderately complex instruments or machinery and troubleshoot faulty equipment effects repairs or initiates repair processes as appropriate.
• Maintain inventories of consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies related to activities by anticipating usage rates, order lead times, and ordering/purchasing procedures.
• Promptly and effectively communicate issues to Technology Leader or lead scientists in order to enable or accelerate problem resolution.
• Actively participate in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group, department, and functional topics.
• This role requires the operation of a forklift. 

Qualifications

• A minimum of an associate’s degree in science related discipline or 3 or more years of relevant Military experience required. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering preferred.
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in chemical plant or lab handling large quantities of chemicals, specifically isocyanates and polyols required. 
• Analytical experience in quality testing and Forklift operation experience preferred.

Your Skills

• Chemical Handling & Blending Expertise: Confidently work with large volumes of chemicals—including isocyanates and polyols—dispensing and mixing them safely using various methods and equipment.
• Quality Control & Analytical Testing: Conduct quality control tests, analyze results, and ensure samples meet required standards before progressing in development.
• Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Operate and maintain laboratory and pilot plant equipment while calibrating and troubleshooting instruments as needed.
• Documentation & Data Integrity: Accurately document batching records, test results, and inventory logs to support intellectual property protection and regulatory compliance.
• Team Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with scientists, technicians, and logistics teams, actively participating in meetings and communicating issues to accelerate problem resolution.
