Overview

Under the supervision of the Head of Security, the Lead Security Officer will provide necessary administrative leadership for the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) staff, the collections housed within, and the Center's occupants. This position will instruct and coordinate the daily schedule and activities of full-time and part-time security officers, as well as contract security guards.

This position is a 24-hour emergency responder and will lead the department in the absence of the Head of Security.

This position will have a variable four-day schedule. The schedule will be determined by the supervisor and may be modified from time to time to meet the changing needs of the YCBA. In addition, evening and weekend hours are sometimes required.
 

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Prior experience with Security, Fire, and CCTV monitoring systems. 3 years of supervisory experience. Computer literacy and superior telephone, radio, and interpersonal skills. Prior experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

2. Ability to maintain composure under stress. Excellent public relations and communication skills. Must exhibit mature, responsible decision-making, problem-solving, and judgment skills.

3. May be required to work during scheduled off hours.

4. Demonstrated ability to: stand/walk for extended periods of time, climb up six flights of stairs, respond quickly in an emergency situation. Lift 30 lbs. to shoulder height, 40 lbs. to waist, above shoulder level to secure doors and other equipment.

5. Hear and respond to auditory stimuli in a busy, crowed environment with or without an earpiece.

1. Prior experience in a museum setting.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Oversee, instruct and coordinate the activities of Security Officers and Central Station Operators. 2. Conduct daily roll calls, uniform inspections, and departmental training (initial and recurring). 3. Distribute uniforms, radios, and other equipment. Maintain individual records to ensure accountability. 4. Responsible for ensuring Security Officers and Central Station Operators are fully qualified. 5. Offer guidance and support to subordinates for improving work performance. Provide formal counseling as required. Recommend formal discipline as required. 6. Organize and monitor assignments of Security Officers and Central Station Operators. Ensure current and upcoming shifts are properly staffed. 7. Conduct daily post inspections. Act to resolve any discrepancies uncovered. 8. Accomplish daily equipment inspections (including vehicles, radios, telephones, etc), and act to resolve any problems uncovered. 9. Maintain adequate post/station supplies. 10. Perform the duties of other Security Department employees as required (escorts, lock-outs, patrols, answering calls). 11. Enforce the University’s security rules and regulations, and protect persons and property on campus. 12. Remain consistently alert for threats to persons and property. 13. Maintain a security watch and safeguard areas by viewing and operating central security surveillance systems. 14. Receive telephone and radio communications. Dispatch Security Guards, escort vehicles and others as required. 15. Issue and control keys, vehicles, and other equipment. 16. Perform additional functions incidental to security activities. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in relevant field and two years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required License(s) or Certification(s) State of Connecticut License for Security Officer (Guard Card).
