We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Bioinformatics Specialist to support Dr. Vamsi Mootha’s lab, which is co-located at Massachusetts General Hospital and Broad Institute. The Mootha lab focuses on mitochondria – often called the “powerhouse of the cell” -- and combines the modern tools of genomics and computation with classical biochemical physiology to investigate this organelle in health and in disease. The laboratory has both basic science goals (e.g., understanding the origins, diversity, and biochemistry of mitochondria) as well as very applied goals (e.g., to improve the diagnosis and treatment of a range of human conditions, from rare inborn errors of metabolism to neurodegeneration to cancer and aging. More information about the lab can be found on their website.
We are targeting someone who has a strong proven track record in computational biology, is adept at computer programming, has a strong command of statistical data analysis and data visualization, who will work as a Computational Biologist. As a Ph.D. Data Scientist, you will join a dynamic team of ~25 post-docs and professional scientists dedicated to high-impact discovery and pursue your own, independent projects while also supporting those of other wet-lab scientists. This is a rare opportunity to be part of an exciting team of leaders in biochemistry, computational biology, and clinical medicine, with ample opportunities for co-authorship on high-impact publications.
Application Instructions
Please include the following items in one PDF as part of your application.
Cover Letter MUST be included for full consideration.
A cover letter including a summary of your research experience, highlighting your 1st author papers, and details your proficiency in modern computational biology.
Your curriculum vitae includes a list of publications with brief (2-3 sentences) descriptions of your specific contributions to the published work.
Your GitHub Handle
Names and contact information for at least 3 references.
What we provide:
A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
Being part of the vibrant scientific and medical communities at Massachusetts General Hospital and Broad Institute.
Opportunity to be a core part of a highly collegial, collaborative, dynamic team doing mission-driven fundamental research.
Opportunities for professional development and growth.
What you’ll do:
Analyze and integrate high-dimensional multi-omics data (DNA sequencing, RNA-seq, single cell RNA-seq, proteomics, and metabolomics).
Apply existing computational methods using best practices.
Work closely with lab members to influence all aspects of a project’s lifecycle, from initial experimental design and data capture to quality control, statistical inference, and biological interpretation.
Resolves hardware, software, and/or network problems to ensure adequate support to the lab.
Work closely with scientists to understand analytical workflows and help improve quality and performance in data acquisition and analysis. Develop computational pipelines to meet analytical needs of lab.
Performs complex computer analysis activities of relevant data.
Develop procedures for collecting, qualifying, editing, verifying, and managing experimental and statistical data. Evaluate, develop, and test software solutions to support experimental and analytical workflows.
Design, prototype and implement computational algorithms for processing large datasets in various languages and frameworks.
Pursues independent research projects with the Investigator while also aiding members of the lab on their projects.
Works on or manages projects of where time frame may not be clear and where end results may be uncertain.
What you bring:
PhD in Computational Biology (or statistics with biological applications)
Cloud computing experience.
Proficiency running bioinformatics pipelines in R, Matlab, and/or Python.
Proficiency in data analysis, data visualization, and statistical inference.
Ability to perform independent research and to apply experience to develop new methodologies.
Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise. Remains technically competent at the leading edge of research.
A willingness and patience to aid early career researchers.
Curiosity, strong work ethic, strong collaborative spirit, desire to have a positive impact in biomedicine
