Job Description
Efficiently performs routine and specialized tests in one or various sections of the clinical laboratory, independently or with minimal supervision. Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed and reports results within established time frames. Serves as a resource person and clinical/technical expert and role model. Provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership. The position actively supports the Hospital’s and the department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals, through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.
Area Specific Job Accountabilities:
Follows clinical laboratory testing procedures and policies in the performance of routine and specialized tests. Identifies source and nature of test problems; makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action.
Applies scientific methods in problem-solving and evaluates new methods and techniques. Assures that quality management criteria are met.
Adheres to established organizational policies in handling blood borne pathogens, biohazardous and chemical substances.
Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed, and reports results within established time frames.
Reviews, documents and evaluates quality control daily and weekly. Identifies deviations from expected performance criteria, recommends, implements and documents corrective action seeking input from the manager if required. Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of test interference/problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action, based on test theory and knowledge. Maintains schedule and compliance for completion of instrument verification studies. Assigns and verifies completion of testing, completes and routes all documentation to the lab manager/director.
Verifies laboratory procedures are completed within expected timeframes. Reviews results for accuracy and appropriate documentation.
Performs, records and monitors required quality indicators (e.g. instrument maintenance, temperature, etc.) at the prescribed time to comply with various agency and hospital regulations. Checks for weekly compliance. Is able to perform advanced troubleshooting on instrumentation.
Assures a clean work area and properly checks and endorses pending work at the end of each shift. Assists in maintaining sufficient supplies at each work station and proper notification of short supplies. Develops and maintains relationships with laboratory vendors.
Assists the lab manager and the director(s) in preparing, reviewing, and revising the laboratory’s procedure manuals.
Completes competency testing and mandatory and continuing education requirements as defined by the position. Develops, coordinates, assesses and documents competency testing.
Facilitates in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Assists the lab manager and the director in complying with governmental, accreditation, and hospital standards, including the CAP, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, FDA, and/or TJC as applicable to the department.
Instructs and coordinates the teaching of students, new laboratory personnel, and other hospital professionals in laboratory testing as needed.
Assists the lab manager and the director with staff recruitment.
Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to provide consultative, educational, technical, and informational services as needed to families, patients, and hospital personnel.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or AMT, or equivalent certification required. Categorical certifications appropriate for the primary lab section (e.g. M(ASCP) for microbiology) are acceptable.
A minimum of three years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting. Documented progressive clinical laboratory experience with increased responsibility.
Meets all regulatory requirements for high complexity testing.
Demonstrates technical and clinical expertise.
Must be detail oriented and have the ability to multi-task.
Shift: 7am - 3:30pm
