The Refines Accountant manages inventory valuations across South Africa and Botswana, investigates and resolves material rate variances at terminals, ensures accurate Cost of Goods Sold and balance-sheet inventory reporting, supports valuation of lubricant imports with the Lubes Manufacturing Plant (LMP), and owns slate management across both countries. The position reports to Manager Cost Accounting and is part of the Inventory Accounting team which is responsible to manage overall inventory valuations and validations of all stock movements and supports business operations in both countries

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to):

Maintain and validate inventory valuations for all terminals in South Africa and Botswana. Investigate material individual-rate variances, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions. Reconcile inventory sub-ledger to control accounts.

Ensure accurate monthly Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) calculations and balance-sheet inventory reporting.

Coordinate with the Lubes Manufacturing Plant (LMP) to ensure correct valuation of imported lubricants. Verify Base Oil import invoices; ensure 3rd party invoices processed by month end close and process journal entries for unprocessed import transactions.

Own slate management for both countries, including allocation and reconciliation of product slates. Extract monthly sales volumes, calculate and process monthly over/under recovery to general ledger accounts. Prepare and share monthly slate volume submissions to SAPIA (SA) and ensure internal records align with external party.

Prepare variance analyses, supporting schedules and complete audit deliverables.

 Prepare monthly insurance report for review and submission to Glencore London office.

Ensure compliance with all Astron Energy policies, practices and standards. Maintain procedural documentations and update for system and process changes.

Liaise with operations, procurement and IT to resolve data, pricing or receipt issues.

Drive month-end close activities; deliver account reconciliations on agreed timelines.

Work with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of inventory systems with organizational objectives and enhance stakeholder communication.

Participate in inventory verification and validations at terminal across the network.

Professional Qualification and Certifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting (BCom degree, Cost & Management Accounting diploma)

Work Experience:

  • Working knowledge of reporting tools (SAP, MS applications).
  • Minimum of three years accounting experience
  • Good working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) accounting principles

Knowledge and skills:

  • Proficient in MS Office suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills. Ability to communicate and work with personnel at all levels
  • Good working knowledge of IFRS accounting principles
  • Strong financial and analytical skills, commercial acumen and reconciliation capability.
