Job Summary

To provide safe and sanitary housing for a diverse animal population in accordance with ACC, USDA, PHS and AAALAC guidelines.

Essential Functions

Organize and create husbandry changeover schedule for all lab animals and animal housing rooms. Provide clean housing to a diverse animal population ranging from immunocompromised mice to sheep and pigs. Provide environmental enrichment for all animal species and documentation of use of toys and manipulanda.
Clean and maintain storage and accessory rooms (gas tank storage, garage, janitorial storage, clean cage storage, food and bedding rooms). Rotate stock, inventory supplies and submit food and bedding orders as needed. Alert Assistant Director when cage supplies are running low to ensure adequate housing for all species.
Document, evaluate, and report animal conditions to licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs), PI and veterinarian. Provide basic post-operative nursing care such as: subcutaneous injections for fluid administration or syringe feeding for animals needing critical care. Able to handle and restrain all species and assists the LVTs as needed.
Operate cage wash and autoclave in accordance with all safety and compliance standards. Perform daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly environmental testing (steam temperature tapes, light meter testing, pH water testing, temperature and humidity).
Schedule and perform sanitation testing on walls, floors, cages and water samples; maintain quality control logs for routine preventative maintenance and repairs on the cage wash, bottle wash and autoclave.
Report maintenance and repair issues to Facilities Management. Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment when able. Works unsupervised on weekends and holidays.
Able to assist PIs and report animal care concerns to LVTs, PIs and the veterinarian. Able to observe and report animal condition using body condition scoring and grimace pain scales. Trained to evaluate critical animals and perform supportive care such as: temperature, body weight, heart rate, respiration rate, hydration status and study specific signs to look for neurological symptoms. Trained to perform humane euthanasia on mice and rats.
Prepares monthly room charts for sanitation, census, and charges. Collects and submits billing paperwork to the Assistant Director monthly.
Sets up rooms for new studies and all incoming animals. Evaluates space needed for study and cages, enrichment and food requirements.
Knows the normal room parameters for temperature and humidity as they relate to each species.

Qualifications

Preferred High School Diploma or equivalent

Any animal care related experience cleaning and caring for small and/or large animals. Required
Previous work documenting on patient charts or gathering data and experience working with common laboratory equipment found in a biomedical research laboratory highly preferred. Preferred

LIC-Driver's License - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
