General Description:

Under general supervision, performs routine professional and technical work in preparing human tissues for microscopic examination and interpretation.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Receives tissue specimens from clinical services and autopsy suite, determines if specimens are labeled as to type of specimens and assigns surgical pathology or autopsy accession number to specimens. 
  • Places specimens in proper fixation material. 
  • Assists the pathologist in gross dissection of tissue and submission of tissue for histology examination and checks for proper accession number. 
  • Process sections taken for microscopic examination through multiple phases required for preservation and fixation. 
  • Embeds and sections tissue and mounts on slides for examination. 
  • Performs all routine and special staining techniques of histology sections.

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associates degree in Histology or Natural Sciences required.

Experience: None required.  1 or more years of related experience preferred.

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: None required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of the process of preparing histology sections, including the complicated apparatus for tissue processing and the special staining procedures used for tissue differentiation and diagnosis. 
  • Ability to work with precision and care to ensure accuracy and efficiency under periods of pressure and stress. 
  • Ability to establish rigid controls to ensure all specimens are properly identified as to source and type. 
  • Ability to instruct and supervise histology technologist trainees through all phases of training required for registration eligibility.
