We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will mentor junior data scientists, establish data science standard, and develop advanced models and tools utilizing AI and machine learning. Your work will directly contribute to primary objectives of our oil sands operational efficiency, cost reduction, and enhanced production.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Math, Statistics, or a related field.
  • 7 + years of experience working in the energy industry, with a focus on data science.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with machine learning frameworks.
  • Understanding of cloud-based computing technologies, including Databricks.
  • Strong analytical skills and a proven track record of developing predictive models.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of data-driven models and tools that optimize operational processes and enhance production capabilities.
  • Mentor and guide junior data scientists and students, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and translate them into data science solutions.
  • Establish and uphold best practices and standards in data science methodologies and AI applications.
  • Analyze large datasets to extract actionable insights and drive strategic decision-making.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure our data science practices remain at the forefront.

Location and other key details:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40‑hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended hours during payroll close, cutovers, or critical issue resolution.
  • This position may require occasional travel to sites for stakeholder engagement and training.
