Veterinary Technician Job Description

Position Summary

The Veterinary Technician supports veterinarians in delivering high-quality medical care to patients while providing exceptional service to clients. This role requires strong technical skills, compassion for animals, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures

  • Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia and recovery

  • Collect and process laboratory samples (blood, urine, fecal, cytology)

  • Perform diagnostic tests and accurately record results

  • Administer medications and vaccines as directed

  • Take and develop radiographs following safety protocols

  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records

  • Educate clients on treatment plans, medications, nutrition, and preventive care

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe hospital environment

  • Properly restrain animals with care and professionalism

  • Assist with inventory management and equipment maintenance

  • Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program (preferred)

  • Licensed/Registered/Certified Veterinary Technician (preferred / as required by state law) Relevant work experience will be considered

  • Previous clinical experience in a veterinary setting required

  • Proficient in basic computer skills and practice management software

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods

  • Lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds with assistance as needed

  • Perform repetitive tasks including bending, kneeling, and reaching

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced veterinary hospital or clinic

  • Exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, and medical equipment

  • May include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts
