Position Summary

The Application Lead is responsible for managing a Research Administration portfolio of products throughout its lifecycle. The individual will:
- Apply technical and functional subject matter expertise across the organization.
- Undertake complex technical projects which usually impact multiple business units and involve decisions on complex or ambiguous application issues.
- Partner with teams across the organization to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions to our business partners.
- Engage in and support vendor management and licensing activities.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Lead application lifecycle activities, including: 

  • Implements complex applications on one or more platforms, ensuring proper documentation is developed.
  • Leads design discussions with IT staff and customers.
  • Devises or modifies processes and procedures to solve complex problems. 
  • Partners with leadership to define and maintain strategic product roadmap which aligns with business goals.
  • Provides focus to ongoing management of application, ensuring all work being performed aligns with product roadmap.
  • Responsible for quality assurance, including ensuring new/modified applications are ready for release.
  • Manages relationship with software vendors and external service providers. 
  • Leads the research and evaluation of new technology, products, and tools to optimize functionality of applications.
  • Establishes and executes feedback mechanisms to ensure product meets expectations of business.


Provide support 

  • Supports complex operational activities.  
  • Analyzes, compares and evaluates various courses of action and make decisions within the scope of responsibilities.
  • Works with leadership to curate and prioritize work activities for portfolio or product.
  • Provides off hours support, as needed. 
  • Serves as point of escalation for complex issues.

Leadership 

  • Provides technical and functional direction and mentoring to staff. 
  • Trains, monitors and guides less experienced staff.
  • Provides input to management on team member performance reviews, hire decisions.
  • Contributes to the professional development of the team.
  • Demonstrates and delivers excellent customer service. 
  • Ensures continual improvement of and adherence to departmental standards by team members.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • There will be some activities that require trips to other university offices and offsite locations.
  • Provide off hours support, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Research Administration Systems.
  • Experience with the fundamentals of Research Administration.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline.
  • Seven years relevant technology experience.
  • Prior experience in a higher education technology environment.
  • Team Skills: Supports teammates at all times and in any way necessary to maintain a productive, energetic, efficient and dynamic WashU IT team.
  • Communicates effectively and frequently both verbally and in writing with other members of the team.
  • Collaborates with other teammates to provide assistance, and expertise, as well as to receive expert input and assistance from others delivering the best solution and experience for the customer.
  • Customer Service: Must possess an aptitude for patience, professionalism, tactfulness and empathy.
  • Enthusiastic and committed to helping others and exhibit the ability to quickly assess the specific needs of the customer to determine an appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to quickly defuse stressful or anxious situations.  
  • Expert level knowledge of application systems and analysis, as well as industry best practices.
  • Extensive experience in researching and implementing new technologies in specialty or related areas.
  • Has full knowledge of all phases of software development and delivery lifecycle.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
  • Champion continual improvement of internal processes and procedures.
  • Experienced in consulting with clients and higher level technicians and analysts to resolve technical problems and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to provide guidance to all skill levels.
  • Ability to interact with customers to recommend alternative technical solutions.
  • Ability to work extra hours and recognize the need to do so.
  • Ability to adjust scheduled time.
  • Ability to adjust to change and demands on time.
  • Understanding of SaaS model.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business discipline such as Computer Science, Business or Management Information Systems, plus five years relevant technology experience or equivalent combination of education & experience.

Salary Range

$84,200.00 - $148,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
