The role of the Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA) will follow the Organ Procurement Transplant Network (OPTN) approved bylaws for the living liver and living kidney donor programs. This position will be designated to any living donor candidate who is undergoing evaluation for donation and will not be involved in the potential recipient evaluation. This position is independent of the decision to transplant the potential recipient and will maintain all requirements prior to organ recovery.
A caregiver in this hybrid position works Part Time, variable shifts, from 7:00am—5:00pm. To qualify, you must reside within a reasonable commuting distance from Main Campus, Cleveland Ohio.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Function independently from the transplant candidate’s team.
Advocate for the rights of the living donor.
Fulfill the qualification and training requirements specified in the protocols regarding knowledge of living organ donation, transplantation, medical ethics, informed consent, and the potential impact of family or other external pressure on the living donor’s decision about whether to donate.
Review and document the living donor’s receipt of information on each of the following areas and assists the donor in obtaining additional information from other professionals as needed about the:
Informed consent process as described in OPTN Policy: Informed Consent Requirements.
Evaluation process according to OPTN policy: Living Donor Psychosocial Evaluation Requirements and Living Donor Medical Evaluation Requirements
Surgical Procedure
Follow-up requirements, and the benefit and need for participating in requirements according to OPTN Policy: Data Submission Requirements, Living Donor Data Submission Requirements, and Reporting of Living Donor Events by Recovery Hospitals.
Document in the hospital electronic medical record (EMR).
Assist with communication enhancement between the living donor candidate and the interdisciplinary transplant team as needed.
Maintain any education requirement required for compliance with OPTN policy and procedure.
Serve as an advocate and reporter for any living donor candidate that chooses not to donate following evaluation and reports promptly to the Living Donor Advocate Committee.
Meet with any living donor candidate as scheduled or ad hoc as needed.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, healthcare, education, or ministry.
Critical thinking skills, confidentiality, decisive judgment, flexibility able to work in unique and highly sensitive situations with minimal supervision.
Can be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Can work independently from home, the office or hospital setting.
Five years of work experience in a related field with demonstrated social interaction with individuals and evidence of excellence in communication skills.

Physical Requirements:
Requires full range of body motion, manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Requires working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours.
