THE ROLE

The Resale Certificate Manager will oversee the management and compliance of US resale and exemption certificates across multiple states and jurisdictions. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of sales and use tax statutes/regulations, resale and exemption certificate requirements, and the ability to maintain accurate records while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and processes.  The role will be central to the Tax function within Sotheby's and integral for global operations. This role reports directly into the VP, Sales and Use Tax.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the collection, verification, and renewal of resale and exemption certificates for all applicable states and jurisdictions.
  • Ensure compliance with state-specific tax laws, resale and exemption certificate requirements, any other relevant legal regulations and established processes and procedures.
  • Maintain an up-to-date and accurate database of all resale and exemption certificates, ensuring timely updates and renewals.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Sales, Finance, Legal) to resolve any resale and exemption certificate issues and/or discrepancies.
  • Work closely with tax professionals and advisors to ensure the company is compliant with all tax-related regulations.
  • Prepare and submit any required documentation or reports related to resale certificates to state tax authorities.
  • Stay informed about changes in tax laws, regulations, and best practices that may impact resale certificate requirements.
  • Provide guidance and training to internal teams on the proper use and handling of resale certificates.
  • Prepare detailed supporting documents and work papers for filings and maintain current records of customer exemption certificates.
  • Knowledge of sales tax exemption rules, maintain a repository of sales tax exemption certificates and document refunds of sales tax.
  • Assist with any special projects, as directed

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • B.S. degree in Taxation, or related field is preferred, CPA or CMI preferred
  • 6+ years of professional experience preferred
    • 4+ years of technical sales & use tax knowledge with experience in multi-jurisdictional tax environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal & written) in dealing effectively with internal and external clients
  • Strong Excel skills and MS Office proficiency
  • Prior experience in preparing multi-state sales and use tax matters  using Vertex is preferred
  • Experience with SAP is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and outstanding organization skills
  • Independent management of assignments in a dynamic fast-paced environment

The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $95,000-$140,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained.
