Purpose

The Communications Student Assistant will support the Senior Communications Coordinator by creating content that highlights mechanical engineering students and faculty. Responsibilities include suggesting story ideas, writing brief copy, capturing photo and video, creating graphics, and developing promotional materials for departmental events and key announcements. This role offers the opportunity to build marketing and communications skills while contributing to visible, meaningful projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop stories to share on department website and social media platforms

  • Copywriting, copyediting, and proofreading items to be shared online

  • Capture video/photo content

  • Design promotional materials for events and announcements

  • Attend departmental events and interact with students and faculty

  • Other duties as assigned

Duties are likely to evolve as experience is gained within the department. This is a long-term opportunity that will lead into future semesters (depending on performance).

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at The University of Texas at Austin

  • Experience with journalistic writing/copywriting/editing/proofreading

  • Experience using design software (Canva, Adobe Suite, Microsoft 365)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous video/photo content experience

  • Experience with student engagement

Hourly Rate

$15.00

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions, Monday-Friday in the Engineering Teaching Center (ETC)

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

  • Use of manual dexterity
