The Interventional Radiology Lead Technologist provides vascular interventional imaging and patient care services at defined levels to patients as well as technical expertise and direction to Vascular Technologists as needed.

Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Clinical Manager, supervises and coordinates work activities of assigned personnel.
- Schedules work assignments and prepares master schedule.
- May perform payroll time sheet for employees.
- Trains, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates performance of employees.
- Assists with interviewing applicants and recommends selection.
- Maintains procedure manual and communicates changes to staff.
- Assists with all policies and procedures required by local, state, or federal law. Assists with compliance or credentialing bodies (ACR, MQSA, Medicare, Medicaid, FDA, etc.).
- Assists with instrument calibration and records to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements.
- Ensures and maintains quality control in regards to patient care and equipment usage.
- Ensures quality assurance tests are performed daily/weekly and all policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Provides technical direction with complex cases and problem solving.
- Schedules routine preventative maintenance on equipment to meet safety and regulatory standards.
- Instructs other area personnel in Radiation Protection, as needed, and ensures their safety.
- Utilizes sterile or aseptic technique to scrub in and perform vascular, interventional and surgical procedures as per protocol.
- Positions patients to obtain radiographic exposure, adjust exposure factors and process images.
- Checks and prepares patients prior to Vascular-Interventional study.
- Screens patients for ability to undergo procedure by understanding baseline lab requirements.
- Understands primary purpose of drugs used in IR, indications, contraindications, contrast drug interactions and major effects.
- Sets-up or operates injector to administer contrast agents.
- May manually inject contrast agent if no pressure injector utilized.
- Operates ancillary equipment adherent to specific procedures.
- Educates patients regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure understanding and cooperation.
- Ensures patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
- Uses professional judgment to adapt imaging and therapeutic procedures to improve diagnostic quality and therapeutic outcome.
- Records and maintains procedural data to include injection data, elapsed fluoroscopic time and procedural information.
- Knowledgeable in acquiring, archiving, transmitting, and printing images via PACS.
- When applicable, knowledgeable in after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
- Reports, immediately, any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
- Knowledgeable in billing via RIS. Observes potential equipment dysfunctions and reports problems to appropriate individuals calling for service as required.
- Maintains available up-time at the highest level for patient accessibility.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Utilizes a team approach to process improvement.
- Provides instruction/mentoring to new hires and Radiology students.
- Continually strives to learn new technical information and skills through attendance of periodic in-service programs and participation in professional affiliation sessions.
- Provides after-hours, standby, call-in service as needed.
- May be assigned to one specific site, but is required to cover other modalities, sites, and/or locations as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- Graduate of an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology
Certifications:
- Must be a Registered Technologist credentialed by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists R.T.(R) (ARRT), in good standing.
- Certification in Cardiovascular-Interventional Radiography: R.T.(R)(CV)(ARRT) or Vascular-Interventional Radiology: R.T.(R)(VI)(ARRT).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Complexity of Work:
- Provide critical thinking and resourcefulness in instances where normal, routine practice cannot be applied, often in high stress situations.
- Knowledge of radiologic physics and computerized vascular equipment, so as to safely inject and image human vascular anatomy.
- Thorough knowledge of vascular anatomy and pathology sufficient to apply to interventional and diagnostic exams.
- Must be knowledgeable of sterile technique with ability to create and maintain a sterile environment.
- Ability to function well with minimal to no supervision.
Work Experience:
- Two years recent modality experience.
- Prefer previous experience in high volume angiography department.
- Ability to direct, evaluate and supervise others.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
