Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications Administrative Assistant II –Back Office Medical Assistant, UNLV Student Wellness, Student Health Center [R0144382]

ROLE of the POSITION

Student Wellness at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas seeks a full-time Back Office Medical Assistant II, to join our healthcare team at the Student Health Center (SHC) and Faculty and Staff Treatment (FAST) Center. The AAII Back Office Medical Assistant duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform accurate and thorough patient intakes with minimal spelling errors and review patient history, vital signs, and medications.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Work with SHC specialists, such as the gynecology and sports medicine providers, and accept higher level acuity assignments.
  • Complete laboratory requisitions ensuring all relevant information is included, along with supporting documentation (e.g., copies of insurance cards) when indicated.
  • Apply principles of universal precautions, aseptic technique, and infection control.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and medical procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as vision screening, EKG, and spirometry, as recommended by the reason for patient visit.
  • Assist providers with examinations, clinical procedures, and treatments.
  • Perform accurate inventory of medications, vaccines, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prepare and administer immunizations per SHC policy and procedure. 
  • Follow up on test results under the guidance of registered nurses and healthcare providers.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple tasks as needed in the clinic.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule as needed, based on patients, staffing, and clinical need.
  • Effectively and efficiently use the SHC/FAST Center electronic health records system.
  • Maintain proper (e.g., correct spelling, clear and definitive statements) legible documentation and clinical records.
  • Prepare, maintain, and stock examination and treatment areas.
  • Teach patients methods of health promotion.
  • Treat patients with compassion and empathy.
  • Assist in the training of newly hired MOAs.
  • Assist the sterilization team with decontamination and sterilization of reusable medical instruments.
  • Comply with the SHC/FAST Center’s policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.
  • Answer telephones, emails, instant messages (IM) and assist with requests resulting from these inquiries.
  • Participate in infection prevention assessments and safety drills.
  • Comply with quality assurance practices.
  • Provide patients/clients and guests with accurate general information about the Student Wellness Center (SWC) and its services.
  • Schedule, re-schedule, and cancel appointments.
  • Obtain supplies from other departments as needed (e.g., liquid nitrogen).
  • Work performance should be a standard others would want to emulate, such as showing initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Participate on committees or special projects as deemed appropriate by your supervisor, including search committees for vacant positions.
  • Participate in infection prevention assessments and safety drills.
  • Strictly uphold the confidentiality of health information and protect patients’ right to privacy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of clerical and administrative support experience which included experience in one or more of the following areas: maintaining records and files; preparing a variety of materials using a personal computer or word processor; assisting customers in completing forms and applications; and/or performing secretarial duties in support of professional staff; OR one year of experience as an Administrative Assistant I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

High school diploma and successful completion of a medical assistant or equivalent program. A valid medical assistant or equivalent national certification and a valid CPR certification are required.

All candidates must pass a background screening.

Employees of the UNLV Student Wellness Center must be in compliance with our Employee Exposure to Communicable Disease (Prevention of) Policy, and Immunization Compliance Manager.

SALARY

Grade 25 Step 1, salary 42,636.96. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
