As a Platform Engineer III on Capital Group’s DevHub team, you will support the development and customization of our internal developer portal, built upon the Backstage open-source platform. The ideal candidate will excel in software development, with a focus on building and enhancing platform capabilities, and bring full-stack experience with AWS, Terraform, TypeScript, Python, and modern frameworks. This position requires a strong foundation in software development, a passion for automation, and familiarity with open-source tools and methodologies.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will design, develop, and maintain features, plugins, and APIs to ensure smooth integration and interoperability for Backstage and other platforms.
  • You will author blueprints and starter kits that implement golden paths, standardizing development patterns and security best practices for all developers across the company..
  • You will build APIs, tools, and services to enhance platform functionality and user experience while improving team efficiency and delivery velocity.
  • You will contribute to the evolution of DevHub by delivering scalable solutions focused on improving the Developer Experience and automating self-service capabilities.
  • You will build modern, responsive front-end interfaces with React and TypeScript while developing robust backend services using Python, Java, and frameworks such as Spring Boot.
  • You will design, build, and consume RESTful and GraphQL APIs to enable seamless integration and communication across systems.
  • You will develop custom dashboards that aggregate and visualize data from multiple systems, providing teams with actionable analytics to drive efficiencies and accelerate delivery velocity.
  • You will leverage open-source technologies to integrate Backstage with platforms such as data lakes, observability platforms, ITSM tools, and orchestrators (e.g., Datadog, ServiceNow, Rafay).
  • You will implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform to automate provisioning, ensure consistency, and facilitate environment management.
  • You will develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Harness.io and GitHub to streamline deployment processes and enhance reliability.
  • You will work with GitHub Copilot and generative AI technologies to improve development productivity, incorporating these capabilities into both personal workflows and the platform's offerings to developers.
  • You will support the integration of identity and access management solutions, including OKTA and SSO technologies, to ensure secure, seamless, and scalable authentication and authorization.
  • You will troubleshoot, optimize, and monitor system integrations across tools and services, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability in production environments.
  • You will evaluate and analyze third-party technologies, open-source software, and plugins to assess their suitability for extending platform capabilities. This includes scorecarding solutions against requirements, standards, and best practices, and collaborating with senior developers and architects to implement approved solutions that align with enterprise standards.
  • You will partner with cross-functional teams, including product managers and senior engineers, to grow your abilities and deliver impactful features.
  • You champion best practices in coding, security, and performance optimization.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on developing platforms, frameworks, and backend or full-stack development.
  • Proficiency in React, Typescript, and Node.js; familiarity with additional languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go) is a plus.
  • Expertise in cloud services, particularly AWS, and experience with serverless and container-based architectures.
  • Familiarity with open-source frameworks and tools.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and debugging skills.
  • Experience writing unit tests to ensure code quality, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Continuous improvement and customer-centric mindset
  • Experienced with delivering projects within their team/function
  • Track record of driving operational excellence
  • Self-driven (to manage workload and outcomes)
  • Strong collaboration skills

Nice to Have:

  • Familiarity with the Backstage Development Portal (Spotify/CNCF)
  • Strong understanding of IaC tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar.
  • Knowledge of DevOps/DevSecOps principles and practices.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Harness.io, ArgoCD).
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures or service meshes.
  • Familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) or generative AI models.

Southern California Base Salary Range: $116,974-$187,158

In addition to a highly competitive base salary, per plan guidelines, restrictions and vesting requirements, you also will be eligible for an individual annual performance bonus, plus Capital’s annual profitability bonus plus a retirement plan where Capital contributes 15% of your eligible earnings.
