SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) with 5-7 years of experience to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of PostgreSQL and MySQL architecture, performance tuning expertise, and the ability to handle production issues in collaboration with application teams. The candidate should also have a solid understanding of AWS cloud services, including RDS, Aurora, DMS, S3, IAM roles and policies, and DynamoDB, as well as experience working in PCI-compliant environments.

In addition to database administration, the Senior DBA will also contribute to development efforts by automating database processes using GitHub Actions and building CI/CD pipelines. The candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the performance, reliability, and scalability of our database systems while driving automation and efficiency in database operations.

This role requires a proactive individual who can troubleshoot production issues, guide application teams in designing new architectures, assist with database migrations and restructuring, and implement automation for database provisioning and lifecycle management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL and MySQL architecture, with expertise in performance tuning and optimization.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production database issues in collaboration with application teams.
• Provide guidance to application teams during the design and architecture of new products or systems.
• Manage and optimize AWS cloud services, including RDS, Aurora, DMS jobs, S3, IAM roles, and policies.
• Set up and manage NoSQL DynamoDB operations and provide support for related tasks.
• Handle PCI and SOC compliant data and ensure database systems meet compliance requirements.
• Assist with real-time data migration between PostgreSQL accounts and restructure existing database structures.
• Implement and manage database backup and recovery processes, including cross-region backups.
• Stay updated on the latest PostgreSQL features and implement upgrades with minimal downtime using modern tools.
• Automate database provisioning and lifecycle management using Terraform on the AWS platform.
• Develop and implement CI/CD pipelines for database operations using GitHub Actions or similar tools.
• Automate database tasks, including provisioning, schema updates, and maintenance, to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
• Collaborate with development teams to integrate database changes into the CI/CD process seamlessly.

Minimum Requirements:

• In-depth knowledge of PostgreSQL engines with strong performance tuning skills.
• Experience in production system integration, log collection and analysis, and performance monitoring/tuning.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot service outages, including after-hours and weekend support.
• Experience managing production databases in a PCI-compliant environment.
• Hands-on experience with containerized databases and DB proxy services on Kubernetes.
• AWS Certification is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with at least one programming language (Bash, Python, or Golang).
• Hands-on experience with GitHub Actions or similar tools for automating database tasks and building CI/CD pipelines.

Qualification Requirements:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• 4-5 years of experience working in a production database team for a high-traffic e-commerce or similar environment.
• 3+ years of expert-level experience in highly available, mission-critical PostgreSQL and MySQL database administration.
• 1+ years of experience automating database provisioning and management using Terraform or CloudFormation on AWS.
• Experience in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for database operations.

At the time of posting, Rakuten expects the base compensation for this role to be within the range shown below. Individual compensation will vary based on job-related factors, including the skills, qualifications, and experience of the successful candidate as well as business need and geographic location. The successful applicant for this role will be eligible for discretionary bonus, health, vision, dental insurance, 401k matching, PTO, Volunteer Time Off (VTO), and other employee benefits as the company implements.
