Job Summary:

The Senior Manager, Trading Operations is an expert in the pipeline operations and scheduling field leading the scheduling, operations and optimization in the newly contracted gulf coast terminals, 3rd party terminals, and CK’s owned terminals. Managing the daily movement of refined products and other gasoline components through Magellan's pipeline system and other fuel pipeline systems by coordinating nominations, tracking inventories, and balancing supply with demand for fuel supply to Circle K’s stores. Driving commercial optimization between terminal locations making independent decisions in Magellan’s fungible system that adds incremental commercial value. Developing and executing strategies for supply optimization on all pipelines across the US and adapting to operational changes or to ensure reliable and efficient transport of products.

Key Responsibilities:

The position includes, but is not limited to, the following essential job duties, responsibilities, and requirements:

  • Commercial Optimization: Commercially focused on developing short to mid-term functional strategies and work plans to optimize fuel pipeline operations and commercial value, focusing on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and securing departmental operational direction.
  • Scheduling and nominations: Lead and coordinate all phases of forecasting, nominating and scheduling physical movements of refined products through pipelines using specialized software and systems. 
  • Inventory and balance: Analyzing storage levels and adjusting shipping schedules to meet demand and balance supply. Develop price risk management options in conjunction with the Director, Refined Products Trading & Operations across all US terminals. Recommend and implement schedule adjustments and inventory optimization.
  • Communication: Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, communicating planned movements, daily requirements, and operational conditions to internal Supply & Trading teams, suppliers, and pipeline counterparts, always collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including a monthly summary report to leadership.
  • Data management: Accurately populating electronic bulletin boards (EBBs), updating databases, and verifying physical volume activity.
  • Problem-solving: Responding to complex problems and unexpected events, making contingency arrangements to minimize disruptions, conducting extensive analysis relating to blending gasoline components in tank to ensure gasoline is on spec and if not developing a plan to correct the blend prior to shipping.
  • Billing and accounting: Collaborating with gas accountants, reconciling invoices, and assisting in the resolution of billing discrepancies.
  • Compliance: Direct the supply & trading team on compliance relating to pipeline policies and procedures on gasoline quality changes and certifying that gasoline component blends are in accordance with regulatory requirements and best practices, and ensuring all activities adhere to relevant tariffs, rules, and regulations. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Lead efforts to continuously improve operational processes to increase efficiency, reduce risk, and optimize value.
  • Growth Opportunity: As we continue to grow this new gulf coast business with the new leased MVP Terminal, we will add a Pipeline Operator to support the supply growth to Colonial Pipeline supplying the Southeast and shipping to Kinder Morgan terminal to supply Florida. This is expected in 12-18 months, and the role will report to the Senior Manager, Trading Operations.

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years extensive experience as a pipeline scheduler/operator with at least five years of management responsibility.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics or related discipline is required.
  • Proficiency in Excel; familiarity with ETRM systems a plus.

Competencies/Skills:

  • Proven experience working cross-functional teams and managing complex projects.
  • Strong technical understanding of fuel terminal operations, systems, and technologies.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

Working Environment:

  • This job involves working in an indoor office setting five days a week.
