Senior Staff Engineering Manager

Position Summary:
 

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineering Manager with a passion for building high performance, low-latency platforms, and applications. You will build and manage a team of engineers with a deep focus on delivering enterprise-wide products to operate in a highly performant and efficient way. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description:

The Senior Staff Engineering Manager of Software Engineering will lead high-performing, diverse engineering groups to design, develop, and deliver software solutions to meet the needs of the business. Key engineering responsibilities will focus on evolving Geico’s apps with a focus speed to market, security, and 24x7 availability. In addition, this role will be responsible for working with product and business organizations to ensure technology alignment on a strategic roadmap. Innovative thinking and creativity in solving business problems is a critical component of the organization’s success. You must have an ability to work and think creatively in a fast-paced environment, on multiple projects and with multiple project teams.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage projects and processes to keep the team organized, efficient, and optimally running
  • Hire, retain, mentor, and manage engineering staff to ensure they have the necessary skills to perform their jobs and develop their professional careers
  • Manage operational budget and expenses for the team
  • Perform engineering design evaluations to ensure projects are within resource, budget, and scheduling constraints
  • Set, manage, and report KPIs to measure progress and facilitate data-driven decision making
  • Manage day-to-day activities of the engineering teams and project managers overseeing execution of software development projects against delivery commitments and project plans.
  • Seek ways to simplify and standardize designs, operations, and deployment plans, focus on reducing complexity and providing performance, agility, and scalability
  • Be responsible for production operations support and ensuring availability, stability and performance of production applications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of hands-on development and/or solutions engineering experience. Must have recent hands-on experience with developing or designing cloud solutions.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience leading engineering teams.
  • 5+ years of development in a large-scale, mission-critical environment
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong understanding of Agile concepts and processes.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD, Release Management, and Configuration Management processes and tooling Understanding of data modeling and AI concepts.
  • Strong background in delivering digital - web and/or mobile - products at scale.
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts, platforms, and technologies. Ability to prioritize and drive results based on business value to the organization.
  • Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Strong critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to both Senior Leadership and Highly Technical personnel.
  • Experience with developing and running DevOps.
  • Experience designing and architecting flexible, scalable, high-availability Cloud native applications.


 

Annual Salary

$120,000.00 - $300,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
