The Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nurse wifery care.
Certified Nurse-Midwife
- Provides full-scope midwifery services to patients in the outpatient and hospital setting, including but not limited to physical examination, collection, and documentation of patient data, and independently managing labor and spontaneous delivery.
- Performs triage, admission, rounding, and discharge of hospitalized patients in accordance with the guidelines and standards set by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
- Participates in the training and education of student midwives, as well as in the orientation and training of newly hired Certified Nurse-Midwives.
- Conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders, and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations.
- Prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.
- Provides continuity, compassionate, culturally sensitive care to patients and serves as a role model for students and colleagues.
Collaborates
- With health care professionals to perform all administrative activities, including obtaining patient health histories and complete physical examinations, document clinical findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
- Interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
- Documents clinical activities and appropriate narrative summaries in patient’s medical record.
- Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions.
- Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize critically ill patients, as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Certifications:
- Successful completion of Certified Nurse Midwife training program accredited by the American College of Nurses-Midwives (ACNM) at the master’s level or higher.
- Board Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
- Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification (NRP)
- Fetal Monitoring Credentialing – Perinatal Quality (FMC) upon hire, with the understanding that required obtain the Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification (EFM) at time of fetal monitoring renewal.
