Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.

Disney Streaming is looking for a motivated Software Engineer to join the Growth Life Engineering team.

The Growth Lifecycle engineering group is responsible for orchestrating the customer flow and integrating with various other backend services during signups for Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. We own and support many tier-1 services that need to be highly available in all regions.

Responsibilities:

  • Design high performance and scalable systems and improve system architecture.
    • Implement Scala and Java services responsible for storing users invoices, refunds, and chargebacks.
    • These services will also stream events to data and analytics teams as well as accounting systems.
    • Services need to be fast and scale for increased traffic during peak load times. 

  • Write, test, and release elegant software systems that are robust and scalable production ready using the latest technologies
    • The services will be deployed in multiple regions globally and be responsible for handling traffic for over 100 million combined Disney and Hulu users.
    • Work closely with QA engineers to ensure appropriate coverage.

  • Ensure high data quality by building and maintaining validation logic
    • Add appropriate data sanity and validation checks.
    • During data migrations, add checks to ensure data integrity and completeness.
    • Work with product teams to adapt and refine validation rules.

  • Build deployment solutions that allow for SOX auditability and simple rollback
    • They will build spinnaker pipelines that can deploy services to multiple regions and multiple AWS accounts. 

  • Demonstrate engineering excellence by developing high performance software and building appropriate monitoring into the application
    •  They will build tools and dashboards to monitor performance of the services and build alerting capability in the event of abnormal traffic or degradation of service.

  • Attend agile methodology and SCRUM processes such as sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily standups, and retrospectives with the team.
    • They will also be involved in bi-weekly grooming and planning meetings in order to adapt to changing product priorities and roadmaps.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3 years of software engineering, ideally backend server-side development
  • Knowledge of at least one object-oriented language
  • Familiarity with databases (SQL and no-SQL)
  • You care deeply about craftsmanship in your software, and can work backwards from the customer experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field

The hiring range for this position in Santa Monica, CA / Glendale, CA is $117,500.00 - $157,500.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
