GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:   

 

The Manager, STAT Financial Reporting and Accounting is responsible for the compilation and review of statutory-basis filings and related supporting documentation; and the maintenance and improvement of existing statutory reporting processes and controls.  The incumbent is responsible for the compilation and review of annual audited financial statements for insurance entities, as well as non-insurance subsidiaries requiring audited financial statements.  In addition, this individual acts as the operational owner for existing and pending reinsurance contract settlement processes and related controls and serves as liaison between Accounting and other functional areas of the business as it relates to reinsurance settlements. 

 ** This position will be based out of West Des Moines, IA and will need to work an on-site hybrid schedule**

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Manages the preparation and review for quarterly and annual statutory financial statements.
  • Directs the work of multiple Accounting team members for the completion of multiple daily, weekly, and monthly accounting and reporting tasks.
  • Leads a diverse team of employees with responsibility for managing the employee life cycle and experience, including but not limited to, selection and retention of talent, continuous feedback and performance management, reward and recognition, corrective action and employee development.
  • Performs analysis of statutory balances in conjunction with quarterly and annual reporting processes.
  • Prepares and/or reviews audited financial statements and coordinates with external auditor to provide documentation and support as necessary.
  • Reviews account reconciliations and validates balances from subsidiary reports to the ledger for statutory reporting.
  • Prepares and/or reviews journal entries, various workpapers, and statutory filings.
  • Monitors emerging statutory guidance to identify items pertinent to AEL’s insurance companies.
  • Maintains and/or improves existing statutory reporting processes and controls.
  • Maintains and/or improves existing reinsurance settlement processes and controls.
  • Assists internal auditors as necessary.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Reports:

Small team of professional and paraprofessional accounting team members, including but not limited to, one Accountant and one Accounting & Investor Relations Coordinator.                                                                                                                                                                            

Indirect Reports: None

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, plus five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and/or financial reporting roles; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience in the life insurance industry required.
  • Experience in statutory financial reporting required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   

  • In-depth understanding of the life and annuity insurance industry, including products issued, operating activities performed across the entity, and the regulatory environment.
  • Broad understanding of financial statement accounts of a life and annuity company, including investment and actuarial balances.
  • Knowledge of applicable statutory financial reporting rules and regulations along with regulatory filings / forms / exhibits.
  • Excellent financial and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships with internal and external parties at all levels.
  • Excellent mathematical and accounting skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, financial systems and various software applications.
