Position Summary

The Town of Milton’s Operations & Environment Division is accepting applications for the role of Summer Student – Operations (Horticulture). Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations – Forestry, this position is responsible for maintaining the horticulture beds on Town property.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned horticultural work, including pruning perennials and shrubs in horticulture beds, planting annuals, perennials and shrubs, weeding, edging, mulching and watering various horticulture beds, and engaging in various horticultural work practices as required

  • Operate specialized horticultural equipment in a safe and efficient manner

  • Maintain written records as required, park bed maintenance work records, activity cards, traffic safety plans when required (for roadside hort. beds), site hazard assessments when required, etc.

  • Duties include and are not limited to pruning projects, horticulture bed maintenance, address various miscellaneous service requests, bed watering, weeding, mulching, horticulture bed designs from time-to-time, etc.

  • Assists other business units such as, the Town Arborists when needed for special arboricultural projects as directed (street tree elevation pruning, tree mulching, tree watering, tree stake removals, etc.).

  • May occasionally provide Lead Hand duties and supervise fellow students during the temporary absence of Lead Hand staff

  • Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act

  • Perform all other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives

Education & Experience

  • Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary school

  • Documentation/proof of registration as a current full-time student must accompany the application; please attach the proof to your resume document

  • Previous experience in the operation of various hand and power tools associated with horticultural bedding care is considered an asset

Certifications and Designations

  • Minimum G2 license is required

  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate/CPR and WHMIS is considered an asset

Additional Skills

  • Excellent customer service and problem solving skills are required

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven teamwork ability

The successful candidate must have a clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required if selected for an interview. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply.

Hourly Rate: $17.87
