Job Overview – Associate, Emerging Industries

BMO’s Emerging Industries (EI) team is a national group of specialized commercial banking professionals dedicated to supporting high growth, highly regulated, and complex sectors - most prominently Canada’s legalized cannabis industry. The team provides comprehensive commercial banking solutions across the cannabis value chain, drawing on deep sector expertise developed since BMO first entered the medical cannabis market and expanded to full recreational industry support in 2018. The EI team continuously monitors the fast‑moving regulatory and competitive landscape, partnering with companies involved in cultivation, extraction, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and consumer packaged goods to deliver the strategies needed for responsible and scalable growth.

Through close alignment with BMO Capital Markets, the team enables clients to access advisory capabilities, capital markets insights, strategic partnerships, and acquisition support, ensuring emerging industry clients benefit from the full strength of BMO’s platform. Our mandate is to empower clients operating in highly regulated environments with tailored financial guidance, responsible capital, and the expertise required to navigate an evolving industry with confidence.

Role Summary

The Associate, Emerging Industries plays a critical role in supporting the growth and risk‑management objectives of the EI portfolio. This role requires a combination of advanced financial analysis, strong credit analysis, strong industry research capabilities, and the ability to operate effectively within a rapidly evolving, highly regulated market. Associates contribute to client decisioning, credit structuring, and portfolio oversight, while also supporting new business development and delivering a superior client experience. Work is performed in close partnership with Relationship Manager, Managing Director, and internal product partners.

Key Responsibilities

Credit & Financial Analysis

  • Assess client repayment capacity using financial models and analytical tools to recommend appropriate loan structures, collateral requirements, and risk‑mitigating terms.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis and ongoing risk assessments for existing clients to identify emerging credit concerns and ensure compliance with covenants and loan agreements.
  • Monitor client performance and initiate corrective action where needed.

Portfolio Management

  • Perform covenant monitoring, data validation, and portfolio reviews to ensure data accuracy and early identification of deteriorating conditions.
  • Support preparation of credit submissions for new, renewal, and extension transactions aligned with bank policy and client needs.

Business Development & Client Support

  • Develop new business proposals that identify opportunities to onboard new clients or expand existing relationships within emerging industries.
  • Serve as a point of contact for service requests, ensuring responsive and reliable support, and escalating issues when required.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Manager, Managing Director and Capital Markets partners to deliver integrated client solutions.

Operational Excellence

  • Maintain accurate and timely data entry in BMO systems, leveraging data to support decision‑making.
  • Support initiatives designed to enhance service quality and strengthen client relationships.

Required Qualifications & Capabilities

  • Given the unique dynamics of the Emerging Industries portfolio, particularly the cannabis sector’s regulatory complexity, this role requires a higher degree of technical and analytical capability.

Required

  • Strong financial modelling skills, including cash flow analysis, scenario modelling, and credit structure evaluation.
  • Advanced industry research capabilities, with the ability to interpret regulatory changes, market trends, and operational risks unique to emerging industries.
  • Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related quantitative discipline; or
  • Professional designation (or progress toward one), such as CFA, CA, CPA, ACCA, or equivalent.
  • 4 – 8 years of relevant commercial banking, credit underwriting, or financial analysis experience.

Core Competencies:

  • In‑depth analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to collaborate across product groups and navigate complex client situations.
  • Data‑driven decision making and sound judgment.
