Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Surgical Processing and Support Services, the Sterile Processing Technician functions in all areas of the Sterile Processing Department.
Job Details
- Follows daily assignment as outlined on the shift assignment sheet and exhibits flexibility when asked to change assignments as needed.
- Functions independently in all areas of the Sterile Processing Department and portions of the Surgical Suite, i.e., Decontamination, Assembly area-sterilizing (Prep and Pack), House table and OR Instrumentation, Sterile Storage, Runner Role, Case Cart Picking, Packroom, and Equipment Testing.
- Collects and cleans instruments and equipment after use on patient procedures.
- Performs specialized cleaning for Robotic Instrumentation, take a-part instrumentation, Specialty Scopes, light cords, Cameras and a variety of specialized instrumentation.
- Operates Specialized Equipment such as Cavi-wave Ultrasonic cleaning unit, Washers and a Variety of Sterilizers (Steam, Vpro (low temp) and Ethylene Oxide).
- Inspects equipment and instrumentation for malfunction and/or missing parts and reports same to Sterile Processing management.
- Assembles instruments and equipment according to departmental standards/guidelines and uses the daily Production Screen and Key Supply List, Cart/Tray Markers as directed.
- Wraps and/or places in sterion containers, equipment or instruments needing sterilization.
- Sterilizes equipment/instruments using all methods of sterilization and high level disinfection available in the Sterile Processing/OR department and completes the appropriate documentation required for the sterilization procedure.
- Functions in Central Distribution on night shift for Distribution of Emergency Supply needs.
- Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Meets the Sterile instrumentation needs for the Surgery Department as well as on on-site and off-site users that require Sterile Instrumentation.
- Works with Vendor Loaned Trays to assure proper cleaning and Sterilization of these Specialized Trays.
- Performs Sterility Checks by validating Biological Results on Implant items.
- Performs Sterility Checks when in Runner Role, Stocking Instrumentation, Picking Case Carts and taking items to Surgical Suite as requested.
- Performs daily cleaning and stocking of work areas.
- Provides individual operating rooms with equipment/instrumentation as requested.
- Performs the above functions according to Sterile Processing and Operating Room policy and procedure.
- Checks for outdated supplies when indicated.
- Performs monthly departmental cleaning/documentation as directed.
- Performs errands and acts as a messenger when needed.
- Performs other less skilled work as directed.
- Attends and achieves 100% attendance at all mandatory in-service programs, both departmental and hospital wide.
- Acts as a preceptor.
- Works on Sterile Processing Department committees.
- Completes all mandatory competencies.
- Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
- Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, display of the ID badge and safety.
- Other duties as assigned
Education:
- High school graduate or the equivalent.
Certifications:
- Must have and retain an un-expired CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or CBSPD (Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).
- Exception: Team members who have expired Registrations but are grandfathered into the job classification from before the certification standard was implemented.
Complexity of Work:

Work Experience:
- Sterile Processing experience is preferred.
- Surgical Technician experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of Operating Room instrumentation preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping, and reaching for prolonged periods of time. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing 25 pounds on a continual basis; ability to push, pull, and navigate carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Possible exposure to biological and chemical contamination.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform basic functions of position day to day instrument counting, sorting and assembly. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Must be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors to utilize color-coded systems used for instrument identification. All applicants will be required to be prescreened for color blindness by our Occupational Health Department.
