Job Summary:

We’re seeking a technically strong Manager to lead a team of operational data engineers supporting scalable, secure, and high-performance systems that power Disney’s digital experiences across brands like Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who brings both deep technical expertise and a passion for growing and mentoring engineering talent.

The ideal candidate has a track record of supporting high-impact operational and data engineering teams, focused on data monitoring and driving improvements for reliability and observability. You don’t need to write code every day, but you should be able to dive deep when needed, ask the right technical questions, and advocate for sound engineering practices. Curiosity, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset are key.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Lead and guide a team of 15 engineers to start, that monitor the data pipelines and react to production data incidents providing tier 1 and tier 2 support. This includes root cause analysis, stakeholder communication and production hotfixes via runbooks to ensure the timely delivery of accurate and reliable data.

  • Assist in designing and developing platform improvements to support incident observability and automation. Guide the team building high quality data models and products that monitor via dashboards and reports on data pipeline health and data quality.

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation to support internal adoption, governance, and compliance auditing. Own building out key components for observability and intelligent monitoring of data pipelines and infrastructure to achieve early and automated anomaly detection and alerting.

  • Present your research and insights to all levels of the company, clearly and concisely.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with big data technology, systems and tools such as AWS, Hadoop, Hive, and Snowflake.

  • 2+ years of management / team lead experience.

  • Proven experience in the data and ops reliability space with a focus in workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow.

  • Demonstrated success delivering highly available, mission-critical services in production environments and responding to data incidents.

  • Expertise with common Data Engineering languages such as Python, Scala, Java, SQL and a proven ability to learn new programming languages.

  • Hands-on experience with modern architectural paradigms such as microservices, event-driven systems, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for operational reliability support.

  • Demonstrated curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring new technologies through hands-on experimentation or proof-of-concept projects.

  • Strong interest in tackling complex, fast-evolving technology or business challenges.

  • Passion for automation, scalable systems, data-driven solutions, and creative technical innovation.

  • Experience designing and building observability platforms or systems with high availability and performance requirements including dashboards and data alerting systems.

  • Familiarity with privacy regulations and/or data subject rights.

  • A fan of movies and television a strong plus.

Required Education:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. Advanced degrees a plus.
