A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. Responsibilities:

  • This position serves to meet the organizational needs for quality histology processing and testing. The histology technologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery.
  • The histology technologist also processes all cytology, biopsy, and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.
  • The histology technologist performs immunocytochemical stains and assists the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.
  • Arranges for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears, to reference laboratories.
  • Reports pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor. (ie: instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent or supply depletion.)
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas and keeps work areas organized and stocked.
  • Follows safety procedures and utilizes all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.
  • Follows procedures and refers to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.
  • Is proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follows trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur. Ensures instrument operations and results are reliable and performs maintenance checks, startups, and/or shut downs as assigned or as required.
  • Answers telephone, greets customers, and provides consult and technical support to the pathologists, physicians, and nursing staff.
  • Follows quality control policy and ensures controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
  • Documents quality control and out of range results in an appropriate manner.

Education:

  • Minimum Education: B.S. Degree in one of the Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences, Associates Degree or Certification from a NACCLS approved Histo-technology Program Bachelors Degree with HTUASCP) certification Histologist preferred.

Languages:

Certifications:

  • Must be currently licensed in the State of Florida at the histology technologist level. May also be licensed as a technologist in Cytology. ASCP licensing preferred.
