Senior Engineering Manager, Corporate Technology – Product Engineering

  • You are a hands-on engineering leader who still loves to code
  • We are building a new generation of in-house, cloud-native platforms
  • Together, we are redefining how the bank builds and scales workflow technology

Do work that matters

At CommBank, we’re shifting from buying software to building our own products

Our new Product Engineering crew is responsible for designing, building and operating modern Platforms as Products — replacing legacy third-party systems with cloud-native, AI-enabled full stack products that can scale

This is a rare opportunity to join a greenfield product environment inside one of Australia’s largest organisations — combining startup energy with enterprise scale.

Our first two products are already underway- focusing on a new Workflow Platform and a Suite of Agents spanning across SDLC, with more products planned across agentic workflows and data platforms

See yourself in our team

You’ll join a newly formed Product Engineering crew focused on building full-stack products from the ground up.

We operate in small, high-agency squads with end-to-end ownership — from idea to production.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Lead a squad of ~8–10 engineers
  • Be accountable for both delivery and technical direction
  • Work closely with Product to shape and build new platforms
  • Contribute hands-on to code
  • Operate the ropes of technical leadership helping shape our workforce

Your impact

You will play a critical role in building and scaling new internal products across the bank.

You will:

  • Lead and grow a high-performing full-stack engineering squad
  • Set technical direction and drive engineering excellence
  • Contribute directly to design, architecture, and hands-on coding
  • Own end-to-end delivery in a build it, run it model
  • Build scalable, secure, cloud-native platforms from scratch
  • Drive adoption of new products across the organisation
  • Replace legacy platforms with modern engineering solutions
  • Mentor engineers and uplift team capability
  • Partner with Product to deliver meaningful business outcomes

Our tech environment

We are focused on modern, cloud-native engineering with a strong preference for:

Core stack:

  • Backend: Java or TypeScript (Node.js)
  • Frontend: TypeScript (React / modern frameworks)
  • Cloud: AWS

Ecosystem includes:

  • Microservices and API-driven architectures
  • Containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform / CloudFormation)
  • CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions and similar)
  • Observability, resilience, and security best practices

We value strong fundamentals, but direct experience in our core stack (Java/TypeScript + AWS) will set you up for success.

We’re looking for people who

  • Are strong hands-on engineers
  • Have experience leading small, high-performing teams (8–10 engineers)
  • Bring deep experience in Java or TypeScript ecosystems
  • Have built and operated systems on AWS cloud
  • Thrive in ownership-driven, build it-run it environments
  • Can navigate ambiguity and create clarity for their teams
  • Care deeply about customer value and outcomes
  • Lead with high agency, accountability, and intent

Why this role matters

This is one of the few roles in the bank where you will:

  • Build products from scratch (greenfield)
  • Work in a startup-like environment within an enterprise
  • Influence how the bank moves away from legacy platforms
  • Help define the future of internal product engineering at scale
