About the unit 

Corewell Health – Big Rapids Campus has a 22 bed medical surgical unit and a 4 bed critical care unit. This campus is the perfect place to gain experience as a new nurse and grow your career! The patient population in Big Rapids is very diverse, it consists of primarily hospitalist medicine patients with a wide variety of diagnosis, some of which include: pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions.  These diagnoses provide the opportunity to develop acute care skills such as IV placement, chest tubes and NG placement/management.  In our critical care unit it is common to see high acuity patients with sepsis, hyperglycemia and respiratory failure whose plan of care would include managing medication drips (insulin, vasopressors, etc.) and the utilization of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs.  Big Rapids has a well-established team that works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team that includes hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse techs, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to provide quality care for our patients.  We have a good mix of experienced RNs that work alongside our education team to provide our new hires and grads with a great onboarding experience. 

For scheduling we currently have a six week rotating core so you are able to determine ahead of time when to schedule appointments, etc. to maintain a good work life balance.

Scope of work 

Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider.  Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.  Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner. 

Qualifications 

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
