The Production Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Facilities & Operations Directorate supports the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the Laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure. The Division delivers comprehensive mechanical, architectural, and civil services, along with high‑quality craft and fabrication support, to meet customer needs across the Laboratory.

Position Description

The Warehouse Operations within the Production Division is seeking a Driver to join their team. This individual will be responsible for driving assigned Laboratory automotive vehicles on and off-site per Warehouse Operation’s needs.  

Warehouse Operations is responsible for delivering materials, moving office furniture, setting up and breaking down equipment for events, retrieving excess Government Property, transferring gas cylinders, and bringing shipments for outbound carrier pick-up.

This position reports to the Warehouse Receiving Supervisor. The hours of operation for this position are Mon- Fri 8am to 4:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate large vehicles safely, such as tractor-trailers, buses, delivery trucks, or tankers.
  • Inspect vehicles before and after trips to check brakes, tires, lights, fluids, and safety equipment.
  • Uphold all traffic regulations (including on-site and on public roads), Laboratory policies, and safety standards, including hours-of-service rules.  
  • Plan and follow delivery or travel routes efficiently.
  • Load and unload cargo. Secure cargo properly to prevent shifting or damage.
  • Keep accurate logs, delivery records, mileage reports, and inspection paperwork, which includes the use of handheld scanners for equipment and property tracking.  
  • Communicate with dispatchers, customers, and warehouse staff.
  • Manage schedules and meeting delivery or pickup deadlines.
  • Report basic vehicle maintenance issues and reporting repairs.
  • Maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) and required certifications, including required endorsement(s).
  • Provide customer service.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, or hazardous road conditions.
  • Performs related clerical duties, including Equipment Move Requests and delivery paperwork.

The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position but does include the major elements in the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Possess a Class A CDL license with a Hazmat Endorsement.
  • Have a safe driving record and demonstrated ability to operate all types of vehicles including those requiring a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Must meet all DOT/ BNL medical protocols.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and is customer focused.
  • Ability to perform material handling tasks in a wide variety of conditions using various material handling equipment, for example forklifts, skid steers, hand trucks, and manual lifting.
  • Strong understanding of driver safety protocols, precautions, and operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated capability to engage effectively with others and communicate information accurately through verbal and basic written methods, including:
    • Ability to read, interpret, and follow written instructions - including procedures, work orders, and related documentation while maintaining a questioning attitude and consistently prioritizing and enforcing safety practices.
    • Demonstrated ability to accurately complete written documentation, including work orders, reports, and other required records.
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills when coordinating with customers, team members, and management to address work requirements and resolve issues.
  • Must maintain a reliable phone contact and provide a valid telephone number for work-related communication purposes.
  • Must successfully complete all required job trainings within the established timeframe.

Environmental, Safety, and Health, Considerations:

Must meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to:

  • Standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to do heavy lifting > 50 lbs.
  • Ability to do moderate lifting < 50 lbs.
  • Have good Arm/hand dexterity.
  • Able to operate or drive trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Have strenuous exertion.
  • Be alert and have good mental sharpness.
  • Able to work in awkward postures.
  • Able to frequently bend forward or twist.
  • Heights up to 5 feet.
  • Able to continuously walk/stand.
  • Ability to hear, speak, and understand speech.
  • Able to work outdoors/cold environments and warm environments.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to use power and air operated hand-tools.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other related safety equipment.
  • Have good physical coordination, dexterity and balance.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders.
  • Work around moving machinery.

Other Information

This is a Testing Designated Position. Employees in DOE-defined testing designated positions (TDPs) are subject to drug testing, including pre-placement, random, reasonable suspicion, occurrence, post-accident, and follow-up drug testing.

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The starting rate for this role is $34.50 per hour.
