The Maintenance Mechanic 2 provides general maintenance service in one or more of the following: general building maintenance; building fixtures; hardware and systems; HVAC equipment and systems; refrigeration equipment and systems; electrical equipment and systems; plumbing equipment and systems; construction techniques.

The Maintenance Mechanic 2 job maintains a safe and workable environment for all building users. Cross-trains and understands some of the major systems within the facility which are maintained by other skilled mechanics.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
CFC Refrigerant Certification (Type I or II or III or Universal) preferred

Valid Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driver’s record preferred

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current CFC Refrigerant Certification (Type I, II, III or Universal) preferred

Current Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driver’s record if required to drive VCUHS vehicles

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of five (5) years of general maintenance experience*, or

Three (3) years of progressive experience in applicable technical skills with a mechanical or electrical contractor or in an industrial/institutional setting.

*Graduation from a technical or vocational trades program will substitute for one (1) year of work experience

Experience PREFERRED:
Previous maintenance work experience in a healthcare environment

Education/training REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:
Graduation from a technical or vocation trades program

Independent action(s) required:
Troubleshoots equipment problems and effect repairs with general direction.
Interprets and understands blue prints, wiring diagrams and drawings.
Uses precision hand and power tools, calibration or monitoring instruments, machines and test equipment pertinent to particular skill.
Resolves problems involving several variables in or from standardized situations.
Performs a variety of duties, involving frequent changes of tasks which require different aptitudes, technologies, procedures, working conditions, physical demands, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure.

Additional position requirements:

Hours of work may rotate as services to the organization for this position are required 24/7.
Weekend, holiday hours may be required.

Call back to work and overtime may be required.
Site Hazardous Materials & Waste Coordinator (applies to off-site locations ONLY).
Demonstrates the ability to oversee the site-specific Hazardous Materials & Waste processes.

Training includes HAZWOPER, RCRA Training and DOT Training annually.
