Job Summary:

To supervise subordinate personnel in performing a variety venipuncture techniques to collect and process blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

High school diploma/GED and three (3) years phlebotomist experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Phlebotomy certification from a national agency or association.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. Interpersonal skills to allay patient anxiety and interact with staff. Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures and techniques. Ability to enforce clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. Ability to complete and maintain documents and records. Ability to perform basic supervisory functions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and coordinates the technical activities of subordinate phlebotomist; provides technical assistance, instruction, and consultation.
  • Performs a variety of routine and specialized blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
  • Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
  • Maintains inventory and stocks supplies. Performs routine instrument maintenance as required.
  • Ensures compliance with workplace safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional climbing, frequent crouching/stooping, frequent kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
