The opportunity:
We have an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join the Markel marine team in our London office. The Marine Division is based in London but has some limited representation in other key business locations. We accept risks in the areas of Hull, Cargo, War, Specie, Liability and Terrorism on a world-wide basis. We are leaders in a number of our chosen areas and require a commitment to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role. A great emphasis is placed on the relationship between the insured and insurer with a focus on meeting clients and producers in their home territories. Business is written through both Markel Syndicate 3000 and Markel International Insurance Company Limited.
What you’ll be doing:
Work with Underwriters and Senior Underwriters, Marine and Energy Management and Actuarial to implement the underwriting strategy and keep them informed of progress and developments
Working with brokers and maintaining a high level service
Attending client and broker meetings
Underwriting onsite at the Markel box in the Lloyds
Demonstrate sound and conservative underwriting judgement whilst continuously scrutinising performance against plan and adjust approach if required
Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
Confidently and positively demonstrate the subject area of our chosen underwriting approach
Prioritise the team’s underwriting strategy and diligently adhere to it at all times
Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markle’s exposure
Travel to represent Markel as required by Marine Management
Actively keep knowledge and skills up-to-date through courses and seminars, where appropriate
Our must haves:
Wholesale and Retail War and Terrorism Underwriting expertise required – we will look at an existing Underwriter or an Assistant Underwriter with the right experience looking to step up
Proven success hiring, training, team building, mentoring and performance management of a commercial insurance underwriting team
Demonstrated expertise in delivering superior underwriting results
Broad understanding of claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions
Understand and enjoy working in a highly matrixed environment
High energy, ability to deliver exceptional written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter, strong sense of urgency, flexible and spontaneous
Proven ability in setting and meeting objectives and impact and influencing peers and subordinates agreement
