We are seeking a Senior Accountant (AP Operations & Finance Support) to join our finance team in a role that combines hands-on operational responsibilities with analytical support functions. The successful candidate will be responsible for accounts payable and expense management, and collaborate closely with the Head of Tax to ensure timely and accurate tax filing and compliance. Additionally, the role provides essential support with payroll administration, plays a key role in the month-end and year-end closing, and provides assistance and cover for other areas of the finance function where needed.
This hybrid role offers the flexibility to remote work from home alongside the opportunity to collaborate from our Royal Oak, Michigan office, with in-person attendance encouraged as needed for team collaboration and essential meetings.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable Management
Oversee complete accounts payable cycle from invoice receipt to payment
Review and approve vendor invoices, ensuring proper authorization and coding
Manage vendor relationships and negotiate payment terms when appropriate
Prepare detailed AP aging reports and cash flow projections
Implement and maintain AP controls and procedures
Resolve complex vendor disputes and payment discrepancies
Support month-end accruals and financial statement preparation
Expense Management & Analysis
Oversee corporate expense management program and policy compliance
Review and analyze departmental spending patterns and budget variances
Manage corporate credit card programs and reconciliations
Prepare detailed expense analytics and management reporting
Implement expense management system improvements
Conduct expense audits and ensure policy adherence
Support budget preparation and forecasting processes
Handle complex travel and entertainment expense reviews
Tax Compliance
Assist with preparation of various tax returns (sales, use, property, etc.) across multiple states and jurisdictions
Support tax provision calculations and quarterly estimates
Help maintain tax workpapers and supporting documentation
Assist with tax audits and information requests
Support research on tax issues and regulation changes
Help coordinate with external tax advisors and CPAs
Assist with tax planning initiatives and compliance monitoring
Support transfer pricing documentation and reporting
Payroll Functions
Assist with multi-state payroll processing and compliance
Support payroll tax filings and quarterly reporting
Help resolve complex payroll issues and employee inquiries
Assist with year-end payroll processes (W-2s, 1099s)
Support payroll system implementations and upgrades
Help maintain payroll controls and documentation
Assist with payroll-related journal entries and accruals
General Accounting & Analysis
Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations
Support month-end and year-end closing processes
Conduct variance analysis and provide explanations
Participate in process improvement initiatives
Assist with internal and external audit requests
Assist with banking and associated reconciliations
Assist with ad hoc requests when required
Required Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
3-5 years of progressive accounting experience
Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting principles
Tax preparation and compliance experience
Proficiency in payroll processing, reporting and compliance
Proficiency in accounting software (WorkDay, SAP, QuickBooks, etc.)
Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and VLOOKUP
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Preferred Skills / Competencies
Experience with expense management platforms
Knowledge of banking and treasury management systems
Familiarity with payroll systems (ADP, Paychex, etc.)
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
