Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Spirit Groups is responsible for assisting the Director of Student Spirit Groups in the daily operations of the university’s dance and cheerleading teams, mascot, and student spirit section. The Assistant Director of Student Spirit Groups reports directly to the Director of Student Spirit Groups.

Job Description

DUTIES AND TASKS:  

  • Serve as Assistant Director for the university’s spirit program, a program under the Division of Student Affairs led by the Director of Student Spirit Groups.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the criteria, policy, and guidelines for the Student Spirit Groups in compliance with Saint Leo University policies, rules, and regulations. 
  • Assist in the marketing for the student spirit groups program which includes social media.
  • Assist in the recruitment of members to the Student Spirit Groups program.
  • Assist with setting and managing the budget.   
  • Must manage the administrative duties of the program. (Institutional Effectiveness, Grades & Attendance, Calendar for athletic/special events appearances, and other commitments and assigned duties).
  • Assist in creating choreography of routines to enhance fan engagement at events.    
  • Responsible for editing and cutting music for practice and game days.
  • Availability to attend required activities and functions on nights and weekends.
  •  Lead practices and supervise team and team managers at games and other college activities. This includes ensuring attendance by dance and cheer team members at said games and activities.
  • Assist with coordinating the evaluation and selection of dance and cheer team members annually, including determining recruiting, selection, and scholarship awards.
  • Assist in the creation/update of fliers and marketing material for the Student Spirit Groups program. 
  • Assist in maintaining uniforms, props, and all other team equipment.
  • Assist in establishing and supervising summer recruiting and fundraising camps.
  • Assist the Director of Student Spirit Groups with ongoing projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be a positive, contributing member of the Saint Leo University community, recognizing the University’s Catholic Benedictine values.
  • Must be an ethical person with strong values of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Must serve as a role model for student team members.  
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills with team members, students’ families, and colleagues.
  • Must be able to physically coach, instruct, and demonstrate dance and cheer team members on dance fundamentals, collegiate-level skills, game-day presence, sportsmanship, and leadership.
  • Team Player.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Clean driving record and capable of driving University Vans.

Knowledge: 

  • Basic dance and cheer knowledge on a collegiate level .  

             

Skills: 

  • Strong administrative and communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Choreography experience.
  • Strong technology and marketing skills.

Abilities: 

  • Ability to lift/move objects weighing over 50lbs with a hand truck.
  • Ability to coach and lead a team or student group.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle/van.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two years of administrative/coaching experience.
  • Three to Five Years of collegiate and/or professional dance and cheer experience (coaching, coordination, and/or dance performance).
