General Description:

Under general direction, supervises and participates in professional clinical pastoral work for OU Health.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Performs duties of Chaplain. 
  • Conducts special programs, such as Sunday schools, Bible classes and religious services for patients and staff. 
  • Visits new admissions; makes routine visits to units to offer spiritual guidance or personal adjustment when appropriate. 
  • Supervises clinical training of pastoral interns in one or more specialized phases of the training program. 
  • Serves as a correspondent for inpatients when necessary. 
  • Represents OU Health to outside agencies and organizations when explaining the role and purpose of the Chaplain’s service.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree or equivalent number of twenty-four (24)  semester hours in religion; or graduated from an accredited theological seminary; AND completion of a specialized clinical pastoral training in an accredited training program; an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting two (2) years of full time employment as an ordained minister, priest or rabbi in an established church, temple or synagogue for completion of the specialized clinical pastoral training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Knowledge of religious theories, principles and practices of different faith groups.  Knowledge of counseling methods and techniques. Ability to supervise chaplains of all faiths.  Ability to develop and conduct religious services, rites, Sunday school and Bible classes.  Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public.  Must have good conversation skills, which foster empathy for a patient’s condition and consideration for the feelings and concerns of family and staff.  Work will often be under stressful conditions.
