The CBA technology unit delivers the best digital banking services to Commonwealth Bank customers and to do so is responsible for digital delivery, group data and analytics, technology, and technology infrastructure, cyber, fraud, physical security, and business resilience for all divisions across CBA. It is also dedicated to delivering the best workplace technology experience for our over 53,000 people across CBA and focused on providing the latest tools, technology, and resources to enhance the way we work together and empower our people to achieve more for our customers.

You’ll be part of the CDAO (Chief Data and Analytics Office) team which is responsible for leading the delivery of world-class data, analytics, and technology capabilities to improve the financial well-being of our customers and communities. We’re in charge for CommBank’s key analytics capabilities and work to create world-leading capabilities for data analytics, information management and decisioning. We work across the AWS Cloud, Hadoop Big Data Platform, Analytics Workbench for Machine Learning, Pega Decisioning, SAS, R, Tableau, Oracle BI, Ab Initio. 

As an Engineering Manager - Chapter Lead, you will be leading engineers that report to you, instilling a growth mindset and innovative ways of working. You’ll play an important role in steering the organisation by providing expert advice relating to technology, solution design and architecture, people leadership and hiring. You will bring a perfect blend of people management and technical expertise and will be responsible for shaping the evolution of the technical squad by contributing to the technology strategy, drafting quarterly crew memos, prioritising backlog, defining delivery roadmaps, and deciding which problems to invest in solving.

  • Have demonstrated experience in leading high-performing cross-functional engineering teams with a solid technical background.
  • Contributes to CommBank’s Engineering Management Practice by coaching and mentoring engineers and raising the bar for discipline across the organization.
  • Effectively communicate engineering practice standards and consistent ways of working across squads and CBA that align to global best practice.
  • Drives a true DevSecOps mindset, where engineering owns what they build and truly values customer feedback.
  • Promotes open communication and creates a safe working environment where our engineers’ voices are heard to achieve great outcomes for our organisation, our customers, and the community.
  • Encourages risk-taking and constructively challenges the status quo while influencing stakeholders and building diverse and inclusive teams.

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

AWS Cloud

  • Ideal Experience: Designing and managing cloud infrastructure, optimising costs, ensuring security.
  • Tools and Technologies: e.g. EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Redshift.

Streaming Technologies

  • Ideal Experience: Real-time data streaming and processing.
  • Tools and Technologies: e.g. Apache Kafka, Apache Flink.

Programming Languages

  • Ideal Experience: Proficiency in one of Java (scalable applications), Python (data analysis, ML, scripting), or Scala (functional programming, Apache Spark).

Data Engineering and AI

  • Ideal Experience: Designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines; developing and deploying machine learning models.
  • Tools and Technologies: e.g. Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark.

Platform Engineering

  • Ideal Experience: Designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable, reliable, and secure platforms.
  • Tools and Technologies: e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Ansible, Prometheus, Grafana, Jenkins.
  • Focus Areas: Containerization, infrastructure as code, monitoring, security, and CI/CD pipelines.

Test Automation

  • Ideal Experience: Designing, implementing, and maintaining automated test frameworks.
  • Tools and Technologies: e.g. JUnit, Pytest, Playwright, Postman, and JMeter.

Additional Skills

  • Banking Domain: Experience in banking is a plus for understanding industry-specific challenges.
