General Description:

Under general direction, administers ordered sedation and monitors patient.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Upon request to schedule procedural sedation, reviews patient’s medical chart for candidacy of patient.
  • Determines if patient meets required criteria by reviewing patient’s medical history and current status, evaluation of food and fluid intake, allergies, airway assessment, relevant diseases or physical abnormalities, current medications or previous complications with sedation. 
  • Responsible for the proper setup and safety of the procedure room.
  • Ensures consent for the procedure is properly obtained. 
  • Prepares documentation of required sedation paperwork. 
  • Administers ordered medication and/or assists the physician with the administration of medications. 
  • Continuously monitors the patient and documents status as required until patient achieves pre-sedation level of consciousness and is transported back to home floor.

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.  Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.

Experience: Three (3) years’ experience as an RN in Pediatric ICU

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. PALS (American Heart Association) required within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Knowledge of the pharmacological agents used in sedation and analgesia as well as the physiological monitoring and possible complications of a patient sedated with these agents.  Skill in airway management and resuscitation.  Ability to maintain current education with testing that evaluates knowledge and skills related to the management and care of patients receiving sedation and analgesia. Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures.  Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Good communication skills both verbal and written.  Good computer skills.  Ability to work well as part of a team to ensure quality patient care.
