Job Summary :
To provide highest quality health care services in a professional and competent manner by preparing to use and using ionizing radiation for therapeutic purposes as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Prepare for setup for the delivery of ionizing radiation to the patient.
a. Assures that radiology tests and other necessary information/materials are available to radiation oncologist when needed.
b. Interprets radiation oncologist’s instructions and prescription to achieve desired results.
c. Arranges and prepares room to accommodate desired setup.
d. Prepare/positions patient for setup, providing instruction/education to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
e. Uses and/or produces accessories for patient positioning/immobilization.
f. Operates simulator equipment.
g. Provides radiographic and CT scanning assistance to radiation oncologist.
h. Measures and records all necessary parameters needed for treatment.
i. Uses and/or produces accessories for shielding, bolus, or dose distribution effects.
j. Performs dosimetry calculations.
k. Prepares data and materials needed for physicist plans and calculations.
l. Identifies and evaluates individual patients (and family) needs regarding their treatment, age appropriate needs, physical health, and psycho-social status and intervenes directly or communicates necessary information to appropriate personnel.
2. Delivers ionizing radiation to the patient.
a. Interprets radiation oncologist’s instruction and prescription to obtain desired results.
b. Arranges and prepares room to accommodate desired treatment.
c. Prepares/positions patient for treatment, providing instruction/education to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
d. Uses and/or produces accessories for patient positioning/immobilization.
e. Measures and records all necessary parameters needed to document accurate radiation delivery.
f. Uses and/or produces accessories for shielding bolus, or dose distribution effects.
g. Operates linear accelerator equipment.
h. Adjusts treatment parameters when required to do so per the radiation oncologist or to fulfill requirements of treatment set-up information.
i. Identifies and evaluates individual patients (and family) needs regarding their treatment, age appropriate needs, physical health, and psycho-social status and intervenes directly or communicates necessary information to appropriate personnel. Uses common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick or handicapped with regard to the patient’s age and diagnosis.
3. Operates computer equipment.
4. Participates in intra/inter departmental activities directed at maintaining and improving quality care.
a. Performs daily warm-up and machine testing activities on simulator and treatment machine
b. Obtains electronic MV portal radiographs, KV reference images, and Cone Beam CTs prior to and during course of treatment.
c. Reviews patient chart on a periodic basis.
d. Performs other functions as assigned directed at quality maintenance/quality improvement.
5. Maintains skills, knowledge necessary to provide essential functions.
6. Maintains CPR Basic Life Support certification.

Education and Experience Required:
Radiation Therapists must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be a graduate of an approved School of Radiation Therapy and have the credentials as stated in IX Vocational Preparation.
Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:
Radiation Therapists must achieve and maintain in good standing the credential R.T. (T) A.R.R.T.
