General Description:

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) will serve as clinical provider, expert clinician, and member of leadership. Will promote and support service line by providing advanced practice physician support, elevate nursing practice, and interdisciplinary team cohesiveness.  Will maximize patient care and safety outcomes by addressing patient, staff, and service line.

As a provider, will assist physicians and nursing staff in delivering effective, timely, and relevant patient- focused care.  This includes but not limited to,  physical assessments, H&P and progress note documentation, consenting process, ordering treatments, prescribing medications, interpret diagnostics, and facilitate hospitalization and home care needs. Review and implement the most-current professional guidelines and standards of the various surgical specialties.

As member of leadership, will cultivate environment of excellence, lead and support nursing in the development of individual praxis. This is accomplished by researching and aligning nursing care to the latest evidence based practice, quality initiatives, and interpreting national benchmarking scores and relevancy to nursing.  Exemplify nursing professional development and role-modeling by mentoring, consulting, educating, researching, recruitment, retention, OUH College of Nursing support, and promotion of nursing and patient satisfiers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and contribute to elevating nursing practice within assigned area.
  • Perform clinical evaluations and make clinical judgments based on synthesizing concepts, principles, models, and theories to solve complex problems.
  • Provide direct care by performing comprehensive health assessments, developing differential diagnoses, prescribe medication, ordering testing and other therapies, and interpret results and evaluate care outcomes.
  • Monitor patient care and nursing activities to ensure adherence to standards and regulations by reviewing research protocols and patient records, monitor compliance and collaborate with regulatory and quality departments.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership to identify patient care problems/nursing practice gaps, implement evidence-based practice approaches to these problems and evaluate outcomes.  
  • Participate in system committees and meetings to facilitate improvement of patient care and development of goals, philosophies, and objectives for adult patients within assigned area. 
  • Guide and mentor newly-hired and experienced nursing staff on their professional development journey to obtaining national certifications and advanced degrees applicable to assigned area.
  • Serve as surgical services consultant to patients, nursing, and other health team members throughout OUH and community agencies.
  • Participate in and/or conduct clinical nursing research that reflects the needs of the assigned area and the community.
  • Support the expansion of clinical practice and compliance with new regulatory requirements in the system by assisting in researching the proposed new test, equipment, technique, regulation, etc.; drafting policies and procedures to institute the new program if it is deemed appropriate by the facility; planning, instituting and coordinating staff training; and planning and participating in the evaluation new programs.
  • Perform or assist others in developing and maintaining departmental policies, procedures,    objectives, and patient care standards based on evidence based practice guidelines and/or specialty practice recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: MSN required, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred

Experience: At least 5 years of APRN experience and advancing leadership roles and responsibilities.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:

  • Current Oklahoma Board of Nursing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licensure
  • Current Prescriptive Authority granted by Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
  • Current BLS, American Heart Association
  • Current National Provider Identification (NPI) number to perform services relative to CMS billing and payment guidelines.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number for prescribing schedule III-V controlled substances as needed by patients and utilized within surgical services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of advanced clinical, nursing practice standards, research and evidence-based practice, process improvement techniques and tools.
