Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deli Manager is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  • Promotes excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer focused behavior with associates. Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions and helps resolve customer issues promptly in a polite and professional manner. Focuses on continuous improvement in all areas of the department and makes changes to ensure progress.
  • Takes customer orders over the phone or in person at the store with a pleasant and positive attitude.  Determines what the customer is looking for in terms of size, flavor and appearance. Creates the finished product in timely fashion.
  • Manages department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, orders products and supplies to meet customer demand in order to maximize sales and profits. Maintains inventory levels to ensure the highest quality of freshness.
  • Schedules all Deli and Food Service associates, oversees and participates in training, rewards and recognizes performance and delegates work assignments to effectively utilize talents and abilities while maximizing profits for the department. Participates in associate annual performance reviews and new hire interviews. Utilizes the Learning Management System (LMS) current and new associates.
  • Develops and implements merchandising plans that meet the financial objectives of the department individually or in cooperation with supervisors. Merchandises displays in order to attract customers and drive sales. Monitors competitor activity concerning merchandising, pricing, quality, and comparison signage.
  • Prepares, maintains, and tracks records concerning inventories to calculate gross monthly profits according to company guidelines. Maintains associate department records and reports on all important matters including associate performance and discipline, sales, future, etc.
  • Checks and verifies all department deliveries and invoices to ensure accurate billing. May help unload merchandise and transport to sales floor or storage area. Enforces and follows department practices regarding receiving, dating, and restocking to ensure product rotation. Monitors product quality and freshness.
  • Controls Deli and Food Service expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, controls labor costs and reduces losses due to damages, spoiled product and shrink. Ensures associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products. Maintains food safety and freshness by properly removing and recording out of code products.
  • Keeps Deli service areas well stocked and always appealing to meet customer demands. Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions and helps resolve customer concerns promptly in a polite and professional manner.
  • Ensures freshness and condition of merchandise in display cases along with proper prices and correct signs. Properly rotates product. Handles spoiled or damaged products or products close to expiration according to company procedures and standards.
  • Operates slicing equipment to provide meats and cheeses based on customer preferences. Packages items and applies sticker showing price, weight, and date. Prepares ready-to-eat foods to individual order of customers. Prepares platters of sliced meats, cheeses and vegetable trays. Also requires safe use of knives/kitchen utensils.
  • Adheres to company recipes and safety policies when preparing food such as chicken, pizza, sandwiches, salads and other various hot or cold food items.
  • May operate and be responsible for cash register operations. Follows policies and procedures to ensure proper money handling to avoid cash overages or shortages. Adheres to company and state laws related to tobacco and alcohol sales.
  • Maintains backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting 5S procedures. Responsible for general sanitation in the department. Follows cleaning schedules and department guidelines to ensure that work areas, equipment, counters, display cases, etc. are well maintained, clean and meet all health and OSHA requirements. Disposes of trash properly.
  • Ensures smooth function of department and store by cooperating with co-workers and supervisors.  Responsible to continuously improve job performance.
  • Responsible for utilization of all company provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE). Including but not limited to cut resistant gloves, safety cutters, company sponsored footwear, etc.
  • May also be called upon to assist in other departments. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises Associates within the Department. May assume total leadership of the building in absence of store management. Specific number of Associates under supervision depends upon the store size and presence of store management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, the Associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without an accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associate or bachelor's degree in business related field or Food Service-related field desirable. Minimum (3) years' experience in management in retail/restaurant/supermarket environment.
