The CBA technology unit delivers the best digital banking services to Commonwealth Bank customers and to do so is responsible for digital delivery, group data and analytics, technology, and technology infrastructure, cyber, fraud, physical security, and business resilience for all divisions across CBA. As the Design Systems Engineering Manager, you will lead a talented team of engineers dedicated to developing, maintaining, and evolving our design system. Your team will work closely with UX designers, product managers, and other engineering teams to ensure the design system meets the needs of all stakeholders and supports rapid, high-quality product development.
You’re passionate about design systems and their role in modern software development. You may have previously worked as a senior front-end engineer or design system specialist and are looking to take on direct people management opportunities. You will have owned wide-reaching initiatives that improve design consistency, development efficiency, and overall product quality within a large engineering function.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
Have demonstrated experience in leading high-performing cross-functional engineering teams with a solid technical background.
Are hands-on in contributing to the objectives of the Design System Engineering team, while also working with and influencing others across the organization
Acts as the thought leader on design systems, component libraries, and front-end architecture within a complex and diverse technology stack.
Can coach and mentor a team of Design System Engineers, guiding them through complex problems while also uplifting capabilities through a well-thought-out learning path.
Identifies new initiatives for the team that provide robust objectives and outcomes, driving innovation in our design system approach.
Authors, contributes to, and review design system documentation, component specifications, and engineering artefacts.
Works with and influence the wider engineering and design practices within the organization, providing valuable input on the overall strategic direction.
Tech Skills:
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:
Solid experience working with design systems, component libraries, and modern front-end technologies.
Deep expertise in React and its ecosystem, including state management, performance optimization, and testing methodologies.
Experience supporting a team with multiple stacks of engineers - Web, iOS, Android, and Business analysts.
Strong understanding of design principles, accessibility standards, and cross-platform compatibility.
Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch) and the designer-developer workflow.
Any experience with the following would be great – Angular, C#, Kotlin, Java, Swift, Objective C, CI/CD pipeline, and Automation testing.
