About the team and the role:

At eBay, we are at the forefront of combating fraud with advanced technology. As a leader in the e-commerce industry, we are dedicated to safeguarding our customers using innovative machine learning techniques. Our commitment to security and innovation drives us to continuously improve our fraud detection capabilities.

We are seeking an experienced Applied Research Manager to lead our dedicated team in the development and implementation of cutting-edge machine learning models specifically designed to identify and prevent fraudulent activities. Your expertise will play a pivotal role in enhancing our fraud detection systems, ensuring the protection of our customers and the integrity of our transactions.

What you will accomplish:

  • Directly manage a team of Applied Researchers while being responsible for driving all stages of model development: ML modeling, data / training pipelines, model evaluation and validation, productionalization, and performance monitoring

  • Communicate complex machine learning insights and the impact of the models to stakeholders in all levels of the organization. 

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Participate in the defining project goals, working with partners to establish deliverables and timelines. 

What you will bring:

  • MS / PhD in a quantitative field with 5+ years of experience.  Prior experience in payments industry a plus.

  • 3+ years in leading machine learning projects with a focus on fraud detection / risk management.

  • Experience building and deploying large scale ML solutions.

  • Sound knowledge of common ML algorithms and knowledge of their trade-offs involved in their selection.

  • Strong skills in data and analytics.

  • Effective communication skills to layout ML vision and roadmap to both a technical and general audiences.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$149,200 - $234,850

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
