Role Summary:

The Risk Management Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic first line of defense business partner supporting Canadian leadership in meeting our Client for Life goals by providing comprehensive understanding of operational risk and supporting the design of effective solutions to manage risk within the business.  

We partner with Canadian leadership, first line of defence Business Unit Risk Officers, and second line of defence Risk and Compliance stakeholders to assess operational risks, enhance control frameworks, educate business on risk management, provide oversight on risk policy requirements and ultimately enable the business to evolve while maintaining risk within appetite. 

The scope of the team is broad, as our internal clients include all business areas supporting Group Benefits, Group Retirement Services, Client Experience Office and Individual Insurance and Wealth.

As Consultant, Operational Risk, you will support risk activities across multiple portfolios in Canada and will be a key point of contact for Canadian execution managers and second line of defence stakeholders to identify, assess and manage operational risks within the portfolio.   

What will  you do:

  • Assess risk and control design and effectiveness within assigned portfolios, identify opportunities to improve risk management and operational risk management best practices
  • Support the roll-out of new/changed risk and compliance requirements by identifying the impact to assigned business areas and supporting business partners in the design and maintenance of processes/controls to meet these requirements
  • Provide risk consulting expertise and support risk reviews for key business projects, digital initiatives and process changes
  • Day to day support for the execution of the Enterprise Risk Framework and all of it’s underlying requirements
  • Monitor and track status of risk issues and activities in risk portfolio reporting

What you need to succeed: 

  • Exposure to risk management practices including risk assessment, risk monitoring, control design and control effectiveness
  • Experience in process mapping as well as identification and assessment of process risks and supporting controls
  • Familiarity with SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau or RSA Archer
  • Background in Canadian Business Unit functions or general Financial Services industry experience
  • Experience in risk management or related functions (e.g. compliance, process improvement, audit)
  • Exposure to project, program and/or portfolio management
  • Certification in risk management and/or process improvement (asset)

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize many competing demands
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, experience presenting to business partners
  • Proactive and highly motivated individual who will take initiative
  • Strong analytical, problem resolution and collaboration skills

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
