At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to Earth’s orbit and beyond. Engineered with a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is building the road to space.

We are looking for a design engineer with experience in flight vehicle fluid systems to act as a Cognizant Engineer (CogE), supporting the development and delivery of a New Glenn upper stage.  As CogE, you will own the complete definition, design, development, cost, manufacturability, and delivery of flight hardware.  Knowledge of component design, CAD modelling, aerospace materials, stress analysis, and drawing creation, GD&T, manufacturing methods, part inspection and non-conformance management, and vendor management are needed.  You will be expected to work within a team of fluids designers and to collaborate with cross-functional engineers to deliver fully developed and qualified designs integrated into the first launch vehicle.

This upper stage is a space vehicle used to extend New Glenn’s market capability to support higher orbits and interplanetary missions.  A large part of the challenge in this role will be to deliver simple, low-cost designs that fully meet the functional requirements of the fluid system.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • You will ensure complete definition (requirements) of the components
  • You will guide or complete the design and analysis of your components
  • For procured components, you will work with suppliers or other Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components.
  • For in-house components, you will own the design and development.
  • You will lead testing and verification including development, qualification, and acceptance testing
  • You will manage the project plans including cost, schedule, and risk management to ensure timely delivery.
  • You will lead the team delivering your components, including cross-functional contributors as an integral part of the team.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in an aerospace propulsion or fluid subject area
  • Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with analysis/calculations of flow through components or systems
  • Knowledge of propulsion and fluid system components (i.e. valves, regulators, pressure vessels)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and give to a culture of teamwork and inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • 5+ years’ experience in fluid systems design
  • Experience with launch vehicles, launch vehicle upper stages, spacecraft, or satellites
  • Experience in all phases of the product development cycle from definition through operation.
  • Experience in design, fabrication and testing of components for launch vehicle or ground support systems
  • Proven understanding of aerospace materials and treatments
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids including liquid Oxygen and Hydrogen
  • Experience with the design and development of seals
  • Experience designing and analyzing bolted joints
  • Hardware procurement and prototyping experience
