Business Insider is hiring a General Manager, Video to lead our company’s video business.

This person should be a strong operator, with a bias for action and problem-solving, capable of leading the transformation of our video business into a market leader and driver of company performance. About BI Video 

We tell incredible stories through our video newsroom at Business Insider.  And our audience loves BI video. We see over 1 billion minutes watched in a given month. We produce about a dozen series at a time and over 20 new videos a month. Our video journalism has won many of our industry's top awards, including Murrows, Webbys, Emmys, and a 2024 National Magazine Award. The editorial video team tells some of the most important business, tech, and innovation stories of our time.

The Role & Team

This leader will ensure the highest level of success and impact for our world-class video journalism. The role is on our Revenue team reporting to the Chief Revenue Officer. They will partner closely with editorial and product leaders.

The GM will be responsible for building and executing our video business strategy and scaling that through the organization, maximizing our impact and revenue opportunities, in partnership with the editorial team.  

This role is New York City-based, and will be a hybrid role, with a few days a week in the office. 

Key Responsibilities

  • The General Manager (GM) of Video is responsible for the building, implementation and execution of Business Insider’s video business strategy, to maximize our opportunities and high potential for BI’s current video efforts, and cement the future of BI’s video business. 
    • The GM will work in close partnership with many teams across the company to build and execute this strategy, including the Newsroom, Partnerships, Advertising, Product & Technology teams and more. 
  • Key partner to the the Editor-In-Chief, Head of Video, Senior Vice President of Strategy, and other key stakeholders to identify best paths for opportunity, profitability, viewer engagement, and alignment with the company’s editorial mission
    • Responsible for the plan and implementation of future paths for opportunity, maximizing our revenue potential and opportunities, while growing engagement and supporting a sustainable business model. 
    • Help refine and grow the impact of our engagement strategy on our O&O sites and distributed platforms, making Business Insider Video the top business journalism video brand in the US. 
    • Lead analysis and provide recommendations on how to improve and grow our opportunities. 
    • Support the deepening of partnerships with key platforms, balancing the revenue dynamics of each platform and the key levers for growth. 
    • Identify and cultivate new revenue streams for our video business.
    • Collaborate with the Advertising Sales team to drive direct advertising revenue and optimize for revenue opportunities across our O&O sites and distribution partners.
    • Accountable for exceeding performance targets and revenue goals
  • Lead development and execution of a plan for video product evolution on BI’s owned and operated websites, apps and other O&O, in partnership with our Product and Technology organizations, and close collaboration with other leaders and teams across the organization.  
  • Key stakeholder to the Partnerships and Syndication team, supporting identification and capitalization on areas of opportunity for growth in line with the business strategy 
    • Partner with legal to ensure proper workflows and processes are in place to maximize our impact of our journalism on CTV and other places. 
  • Provide guidance and experience on emerging trends in the video space, assessing business opportunities through our strategy and mission
    • Analyze the competitive landscape and Business Insider’s positioning and drive the team toward areas where we can be a top player.
  • Act as the lead video expert on the business-side for the executive leadership team on video at Business Insider
    • Ensure regular communications to key stakeholders and executive leadership on the strategy and key milestones, results, challenges, opportunities, and roadmap. 
  • Support the retention, recruitment and development of an exceptional business team, and ensure all team members have what they need to be successful.

Ideal Experience

  • Successful track record leading and growing a video publishing business
  • Proven skills in planning, forecasting, data analysis, managing budgets and P&L, with a track record of exceeding goals
  • Demonstrated skills as a transformative leader with superb people management 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple teams within an organization
  • Strong understanding of the digital media landscape and video ecosystem
  • Strong understanding of KPI’s for online video businesses
  • Ability to move fast and make good decisions with limited information
  • Good understanding of UX, features, and viewer behavior, with a product and viewer mindset

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary: $175,000-$225,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)

This role will be located in the NYC Metro area, with a few days a week in office.
