About the team

Telstra Consumer is where our Telstra Retail business lives and operates. Telstra Retail is responsible for all of Telstra’s branded stores, as well as our retail sales and services operations.

About the role

Our Senior Project Specialists develop their projects from inception to delivery, define and allocate resources, manage and deliver onsite work during store setup and oversee post implementation work (budgets, reviews, etc.). You will manage and execute on the delivery of Telstra retail store projects at the coal face as the primary responsible person for the delivery of each project.

The ideal candidate for this role will be a senior project manager who can demonstrate a deep subject matter knowledge of retail construction (minimum of 8 years), has a professional qualification in a related discipline (project management, construction, architecture, engineering), is versed and capable in managing and delivering retail projects containing significant IT complexity, and who thrives on working in a highly volatile environment where priorities often change, and change quickly.

As a Senior Project Specialist, you draw upon your strengths and skills to lead and manage small to large scale projects to ensure that they are delivered on time, on quality, within budget and scope. By leveraging your experience in stakeholder management, you will successfully engage with multiple internal and external stakeholders with differing expectations and respond quickly to achieve project objectives.

Day to day you will be working with cross-company teams from retail, marketing, HR, networks and IT and others to deliver important business change projects on behalf of Telstra’s retail team. Your role will be to drive project delivery outcomes, managing budgets, schedule and quality metrics and working “hands on” with the store teams and others during store setup to ensure the store opening events are successful. You’ll also be required to provide quality reporting outcomes, contribute strongly to continuous improvement (often leading the initiatives), and provide support to your team as needed to cover shortfalls in their projects.

National domestic travel for work is required in this role and is expected to be up to twice a per month for periods of 3-4 days per trip.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage small to large scale projects from inception to delivery by applying a range of project management methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall
  • Determine and manage project estimates and budgets to make purchasing decisions for project resources including internal and external staffing requirements, tools needed, and vendor services
  • Monitor project execution and provides frequent project status reporting to calls out risks and recommend strategies to mitigate risks to ensure project success
  • Prepare and present regular status reports and analysis on variance data in relation to scope, schedule, and budget for key project stakeholders
  • Apply broad project management expertise to develop and administer project plans and budgets that include definition of project scope, timeframes and milestones, overall cost estimates and resource allocation.
  • Effectively collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to gain buy in from various groups and manage competing priorities to ensure project management processes are integrated and meet project deliverables.
  • Leverage strong interpersonal skills to present, lead and influence project steering committees with top management stakeholders, provide regular tracking updates to program sponsors and manage or attend other governance meetings.
  • Ensure that the appropriate governance structures are established and followed for project quality by consistently applying project management standards across processes, tools and templates when collaborating with stakeholders and or vendors.
  • Leverage lessons learnt from prior projects and expertise such as global best practices in project management to minimise business impacts and influence desired project outcomes.
  • Apply analytical thinking to investigate ways to improve existing processes and fix pain points through automation, streamlining, and program delivery to meet agreed project outcomes and performance.
  • Measure ongoing project performance as well as changes to project scope, schedule or costs by applying appropriate verification tools and techniques.

About you

  • Strong interest in continuous improvement of systems, processes, cost reduction and sustainability
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills with a pristine command of language and the creation of written project materials.
  • Demonstrates an ability to perform in high-pressure deadline critical situations
  • Able to work individually or in a team, and someone who is self-led and capable of working remotely almost all the time.
  • Extensive experience as a Senior Project Manager / Project Management professional
  • The ideal candidate will have significant experience in construction, especially in retail construction and an understanding of the tools/levers involved
  • Professional qualifications in an appropriate field (project management, construction, architecture, engineering)
  • Experience in developing and executing strategy
  • Proven ability to work in ambiguous, frequently changing environments and yet drive deliverables and achieve project objectives
  • Energetic innovator. Someone looking for a new avenue to grow their PM skill and improve processes and the workplace experience for others along the way
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing stakeholders – internal and external – mostly without formal authority
